SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority announced a 10-year agreement with its airline partners Tuesday to improve transportation access to San Diego International Airport and potentially pave the way for a Metropolitan Transit System trolley route to the airport.The investment pact, totaling more than a half-billion dollars, could eventually fund multiple infrastructure projects to increase transit connections between the city of San Diego and the airport. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez announced Thursday she will place a proposed ballot measure to expand police oversight and create an Independent Police Practices Commission on the docket for the June 23 council meeting."The murder of George Floyd has exposed a crumbling faith in government and mistrust of police that must be addressed immediately," Gomez said. "It's critical that we build trust between communities and law enforcement and restore the public's faith in police oversight. We need to address the reality that many communities have been treated unfairly by police and have nowhere to turn to correct injustice."During a marathon meeting Tuesday that lasted about 10 hours, dozens of people phoned in during the public comment period and called for defunding the police and voicing support for the Black Lives Matter movement."I want the public to know that we are advancing the Independent Police Practices Commission measure without delay, and my hope is to bring together everyone on the council -- Democrat, Republican, Independent -- for a unanimous vote," Gomez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting Wednesday, Southwest Airlines is providing daily, nonstop service from San Diego International Airport to Honolulu.The inaugural flight departed at 8 a.m. from San Diego to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii."We've been anticipating this route for many months and welcome Southwest's new daily service to Honolulu," San Diego County Regional Airport Authority President and CEO Kimberly Becker said."There has always been high demand for leisure travel to both San Diego and Honolulu and, with a military presence in each city, a desire to visit friends and family," she said.
