HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Summer time for middle school students usually means taking a break from lessons and learning, but not for one 11-year-old girl in Virginia.London Hart is actually diving deeper into our country's history and studying recent events, including protests against racial injustice."Back when the protests started after the George Floyd incident, I was having a conversation my with parents about what was really going on and what was happening. They were telling me all about racism," said London.It's a conversation London said was very upsetting."Just because you're a minority, doesn't mean you should be treated unfairly. It made me unhappy that that was happening," said London.So the budding artist picked up her canvas and paintbrush and expressed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement the best way she knows how -- by painting.Then she turned those paintings into t-shirt designs."A bunch of people were really happy that I started this movement with the t-shirts and everybody was buying them and buying them and buying them," said London.London's "Support Shirts" campaign was shared so much online that it blew up."At first, I only expected to sell like 15 shirts at the most. (KGTV) - As different industries and businesses are given the green light to begin the reopening phase after coronavirus restrictions, one industry says they’re being left in the dark. Brian Nguyen is the owner of two Hillcrest nail salons in San Diego and said they’re upset with the lack of information surrounding when nail salons will be able to reopen in California.“Very frustrated, seeing all these other businesses being able to open and nothing mentioned about us, not even a word,” he said.He said between the two salons they own in Hillcrest, they’ve had to pay around ,000 in rent during the three months of closure, while also losing at least an estimated six figures in revenue.In May, Governor Newsom had said Phase 3 of reopening would include hair salons, nail salons, barbershops, gyms, and movie theaters for counties that meet certain metrics. So far, all businesses on that list have been told either they can open or when they can open, except nail salons.When the closures started, Nguyen said they immediately began planning how to safely reopen. As a nail salon, they already took sanitizing steps and technicians wore masks and gloves, which will continue. In addition, they purchased panels for manicures that will go between the technician and the customer that will be cleaned between customers. All chairs will also be sanitized between people. They will take everyone’s temperatures before entering and are asking all customers to fill out a quick survey about their current health. They also spaced out all stations to add six feet between customers. At first, they will be appointment only. In addition, they added a new touch-free area to wash hands with a touch-free sink and soap dispenser.Hillcrest Nail Lounge employee Sarah Nguyen said it’s been hard to watch her place of work suffer and said she is ready to get back to work.“I want to go back to work, I want to get back to work as soon as possible and I want it now,” she said. “We want to pay taxes. We want the economy to go up. Homeowners in City Heights say the neighborhood isn't keeping up with the cost of living. While home prices are on the rise, development plans have come to a halt. Paul Smith is trying to transform City Heights. "They're still equating it to a high crime area or a place not worth investing in," said Smith. Like everywhere else in San Diego, the cost of living there is going up. "People are taking advantage of a housing shortage right now," said Smith. "So they can demand top dollar for their house. Because someone's willing to pay for it."He's been remodeling his home for the past 18 months. Many of his neighbors are doing the same. "We're seeing numbers in the 0's range now, 0, and I'd say probably five years ago you could buy a house for under 0,000."But, he says businesses in the area aren't adapting to the change. "It's constantly having to go over to North Park to look for services or South Park, outside the community."While some shops are moving in, he says it's simply not enough. "New businesses are seeming to move in, but there isn't a massive influx of investments like you're seeing in North Park and other areas," said Smith. "So we're seeing a lot of vacancies here."Those businesses would help build an even stronger community. "I don't always want to have to leave my neighborhood and to another area just to go get groceries, or go to a restaurant to eat," said Smith. For him, it can't come soon enough. "Change kind of is coming, but more needs to happen."The city did work on a redevelopment project in City Heights several years ago. GUATAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family in the East County is hoping someone has information about a bicycle accident that happened Saturday afternoon in Guatay, just north of Pine Valley. Ann Larkin says her husband, Warren Larkin, was returning from a bike ride along old Highway 80, and was just feet away from his home, when a good Samaritan found him in the middle of the road. Larkin was airlifted to Sharp Memorial Hopsital with 10 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a broken clavicle. He doesn't remember anything about the crash.Ann tells 10News she doesn't want to speculate but worries that someone hit her husband on his bike and took off, since hospital staff told her his injuries were more traumatic than just falling off a bike. The Larkin family is now hoping that by sharing their story, they can find someone who witnessed the accident and can provide clues about what happened. 899
