(CNN) -- A 13-year-old New Jersey boy faces assault charges for allegedly attacking the mother of a classmate, after the classmate reported him to school officials for anti-immigrant taunts, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said in a media release.The mother, identified as Beronica Ruiz by her attorney, Daniel Santiago, told authorities she was walking down a street in Passaic, New Jersey, with her 1-year-old baby and her 12-year-old son on June 19 when she and her son were attacked.Santiago told CNN that the conflict began at school the day before the attack, when the 13-year-old and some other boys chanted "go back to Mexico" to a group of students in the cafeteria.Ruiz's son, who is an American citizen, replied, "What are you talking about? We all come from immigrants," the attorney said.The group allegedly threatened to beat up the boy after school. This scared Ruiz's son, so he pulled one of the teachers aside and conveyed his fear, according to Santiago.The teacher called a security guard, who then sequestered Ruiz's son in a classroom for the duration of the school day for his own safety, he said.Later that day, Ruiz picked up her son from school. As they were walking home, Ruiz's son said to her, "Mommy, the boys that threatened me yesterday are following us," Santiago said. They kept walking, but the three boys caught up to them, the attorney said.Santiago told CNN that the 13-year-old punched Ruiz's son in the face, knocking him to the ground. Ruiz then put herself between her son and the assailant, asking him to leave them alone, the attorney said. He swore at her, then punched Ruiz in the face, Santiago said."When the mother stepped in front of (the boy), he struck her, causing her to temporarily lose consciousness and fall to the sidewalk,'' the statement from the prosecutor's office said.The three boys then fled the scene. Ruiz called the police after she regained consciousness, and she was treated at a nearby hospital for facial fractures and a concussion. Her son suffered a swollen lip, Santiago said.The physical pain is healing, but the emotional wounds still lingerThe 13-year-old was charged with aggravated assault and later released to his parents, authorities said. He has not been identified publicly because he is a minor.There is no court date as of yet, said Jason Harding, chief assistant prosecutor at the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. If convicted on the assault charge, the boy faces up to two years in juvenile detention.The school, Passaic Gifted and Talented Academy, has offered to pay for Ruiz's medical bills, Santiago said. (AP) — Google says it has removed misleading ads targeting Americans looking for information about how to vote in November's presidential election. Some of the ads charged fees for registering people to vote, while others sucked up people's personal information for marketing purposes. The ads were discovered by the nonprofit tech watchdog Tech Transparency Project. The group found that search terms such as “register to vote,” “vote by mail” and “where is my polling place” generated ads linking to websites that charge bogus fees for voter registration, harvest user data, or plant unwanted software on people’s browsers. 633

"We were investigating drug sales on the street," said Retired Detroit Deputy Police Chief James Younger whose partner was shot in 1972 by a man who was never arrested for the crime. The shooting left Detroit Police Officer Donald Kimbrough paralyzed from the waist down and he died December 7, 2017, from medical complications that resulted from the decades old shooting. "With the knowledge that he was shot and never fully recovered, the manner is homicide," said Dr. Bernardino Pacris from the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Officer who conducted an autopsy on Kimbrough and recovered an oxidized, deformed bullet from Kimbrough's back. Younger said doctors could not remove the bullet without killing Kimbrough because of where it was located. Sergeant Todd Eby of Detroit's Homicide Task Force has been assigned to solving Officer Kimbrough's murder. It happened August 25, 1972, in an alley near a methadone clinic that was located at John R and Belmont.Kimbrough, Younger and another officer, Donald Hughes, were investigating drug activity in the area when they heard gunshots. Kimbrough and Hughes took off running to the area where witnesses said men were shooting while Younger began to navigate their vehicle around traffic to get to the location. Kimbrough and Hughes spotted one man holding a long gun and ordered him to place the weapon on the ground. Moments later, another man who was sitting in the driver's seat of a green Lincoln Continental that was parked nearby, rolled his window down and opened fire on Kimbrough and Hughes. The two officers returned fire, but Kimbrough had been shot. The man who had the long gun picked it back up off the ground and raced to hop into the green Lincoln Continental. Both men escaped.The vehicle they fled in is described as a green 1968 Lincoln Continental with a black vinyl top. It's unclear if the car was a two-door or four-door. A partial license plate may be GA- 2--.The shooter was described as a white man 25 - 30-years-old with shoulder-length black hair, a thick black mustache and long bushy sideburns. Police did recover the shooter's .32 caliber Colt semi-automatic pocket pistol. A man found it in his yard.  "Don was a good policeman. A good person and very energetic person. We spent a lot of time together not only on duty, but also off duty," said Younger who retired as a Detroit Police Chief and now teaches Criminal Justice at Wayne County Community College. If he's alive, Kimbrough's shooter could be in his seventies. But Younger, Eby, and family and friends of Donald Kimbrough believe it's not too late for someone to help solve the case by identifying a suspect. "Where's man's humanity towards man," said Younger. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A plan to build hotel rooms and apartments in Imperial Beach is one step closer to happening. The Design Review Board unanimously decided to move the plan to city council Thursday. The development is planned for an empty lot on 550 Highway 75. It will be a four-story development with 51 hotel rooms and 47 apartments. Developers say there’s a need for hotel rooms in the area. “There are less than a hundred units of hotel rooms in IB now,” said David Brienza, the developer with the Blue Wave Project, “IB needs a hotel community.” People living in the area raised concerns about impacts to the area, like noise and traffic. The design review board asked developers for look for ways to mitigate those concerns. If the plan gets the city council’s approval, developers say they could start construction by mid to late summer. 875
