SACRAMENTO (KGTV) -- California ranks 37th in the nation for DUI fatalities and some cities have a DUI fatality rate two times higher than the state average, according to a new study.According to the study by ValuePenguin.com, mid-sized cities in The Golden State pose the largest risk.The study shows that several mid-sized cities, Barstow, Desert Hot Springs and San Pablo had an average of more than 10 DUI-related fatalities per 100,000 residents in recent years, or more than 10 times the state average.The study also found that five California cities, Vista, Hemet, Delano, Murrieta and Pittsburg saw DUI fatalities increase between 140 to 700 percent between 2012 and 2017.See the chart below for the complete list of cities with the highest DUI fatalities:  783

Robert Grays was having the game of his life on Saturday as his Midwestern State University squad was beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-13. The 19-year-old sophomore had matched a career-high with seven tackles, with his team about to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saturday ended up being Grays' final game.  With 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Grays went in for a tackle, severely injuring his neck. After being transported to Houston for treatment, Grays died on Tuesday from the injury. Grays was the squad's starting cornerback, and also played on special teams. Grays was a graduate of Fort Bend L.V. Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas."We are saddened by the loss of Robert Grays, one of our own. This is not an easy time for anyone associated with the football program," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "He was a tremendous individual. I really believe he might have been the most popular man on our team."He always had a smile on his face. I never saw him have a bad day. He was an uplifting spirit for all of us. He was an exciting, fun loving guy. He's going to be sorely missed. Somehow, someway we'll find a way to fight through it. Robert would want us to forge ahead."Saturday marked a deadly day in college football. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — California has become the third state to declare a state of emergency due to the threat of the coronavirus.Gov. Gavin Newsom told reporters Wednesday that the state is declaring a statewide emergency in order to take advantage of additional government resources. The declaration comes after developments that a California patient died of coronavirus after reportedly being infected on a cruise from San Francisco to Mexico from Feb. 11 to Feb. 21.The victim was an elderly adult with underlying health issues and was in isolation at the time of death, Placer County health officials said. The cruise ship that the victim had been on earlier is currently being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another passenger who is infected is in stable condition at a Sonoma County hospital.The ship is currently at sea, but testing kits will be flown out to its crew for passengers to be tested before the ship docks in San Francisco."There’s a reason that we didn’t want the ship in the Port of San Francisco and in the state of California at this time," Newsom said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A new report says California, which has a declining prison population, could save more than billion by closing eight lockups. The Legislative Analyst’s Office released a report Thursday saying the state has seen a reduction in its inmate population because of early releases and other actions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also says parole and sentencing law changes may flatten the prison population in the next few years. The report says the population changes, coupled with closing five adult prisons and three juvenile facilities, could save the corrections system .5 billion a year by 2025."The administration has indicated it plans to close one prison in 2021?22 and another in 2022?23 in order to accommodate the ongoing decline in the inmate population, primarily resulting from Proposition 57 (2016)" the analysis reads. "The budget package includes legislation requiring CDCR to inform the Legislature of the specific prisons to be closed by January 10, 2021 and January 10, 2022. The administration estimates the closures will result in 0 million in ongoing savings annually within a few years." 1162
