SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are increasing calls for more police oversight. In San Diego, a proposed measure would create a new independent body to investigate alleged misconduct. Both San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District Attorney Summer Stephan have pledged support for a new body to hold police accountable.Maresa Talbert with San Diegans for Justice said they welcome the support, but there is still some skepticism.“It seems very reactionary after all of this pressure that now they come out and support. This ballot measure is not a new thing. This has been proposed since 2012,” Talbert said.There is currently a Citizens Review Board on Police Practices, but Talbert said it is far from independent. “Their legal council is the city attorney, who represents both the Police Officers Association and the CRB so it represents a true conflict of interest,” Talbert said. The new proposed commission would have the ability to investigate cases. It would also have independent lawyers and subpoena power. The head of the San Diego POA said the support a measure on the ballot to let the people decide what is best for police oversight. “I think if people go into things with an investigative mind trying to find the truth, I think that any of these things can be very effective,” said POA President Jack Schaeffer. Talbert said even if passed, the city council still has to write an ordinance and some of the language could change. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There won't be a single Division 1 college football game played in San Diego this year, leaving local athletic directors searching for revenue streams.Another side effect of coronavirus-related restrictions have been cancellations across the U.S. for college athletics. The impact to some universities and college communities could total in the hundreds of millions of dollars."It can be anywhere from a million hit to a couple million dollar hit," says SDSU Athletic Director J.D. Wicker.And even if games can be played in California, restrictions on fans will leave a hole in revenue."We have tightened our belt. We've made across the board budget reductions," USD Athletic Director Bill McGillis said. "The amount of ticket-related revenue is going to be zero."McGillis adds that when the Pac-12 postponed basketball games in November and December, it cost the Toreros lucrative games at UCLA and Washington."That's a six-figure revenue loss," McGillis said.Meanwhile, Wicker is hoping to play enough football this spring to avoid losing money from a new TV deal that was supposed to kick in this fall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died in Fallbrook late Friday night.Deputies responded to the 440 block of Ammunition Road around 10:40 p.m. to assist the North County Fire Department with an injured man.When deputies arrived, they found a man identified as Nicolas Ramirez suffering from an unknown traumatic injury.Ramirez was then taken to the hospital where he later died.
