DALLAS, Texas – Brandt Jean, the brother of the Botham Jean, whom Amber Guyger shot and killed last year, told the former Dallas police officer he forgives her and didn't want her to go to prison. After giving his victim impact statement, Brandt went over to Guyger and the two hugged as Guyger bawled."I love you as a person and I don't want to wish anything bad on you," Jean said before they hugged for nearly 30 seconds.A Texas jury found Guyger guilty of murder in Botham’s 2018 killing. Guyger faced between five years and life for the shooting, but jurors ultimately gave her a 10-year sentence on Wednesday.Guyger was found guilty despite the ex-officer’s defense that she mistakenly walked into the wrong apartment and opened fire because she thought Jean was an intruder.Guyger was actually at the apartment directly above hers, which belonged to the 872

Childcare facilities are struggling with how they will continue operating during the COVID-19 pandemic.“Providing care right now is expensive. We necessarily need sanitizing equipment, supportive PPE equipment. We need to ensure that ratios are high and group size is low, and that the physical space and the distances that are needed as well as the equipment and resources are available,” said Lynette Fraga, Executive Director of Child Care Aware of America. Child Care Aware of America says it's possible that anywhere from 30 to 50% of facilities nationwide could close permanently, depending on how long the pandemic goes on. That's with the increasing cost of much needed added health and safety measures. Also, some places are getting less money because they're keeping classrooms smaller now.“That means those providers that are open those prices may really be affected for parents, so any way you may look at this equation, the price of care is a real concern for parents and the price for providers to provide that care is a real concern,” said Fraga. The organization says some of the billion the industry is asking Congress for would help families with this cost. It adds that families need to be the ones to raise concerns about access to affordable care.Childcare facilities are planning for what comes next if we see another spike in COVID-19 cases this fall. They're creating emergency preparedness plans, learning from what we've experienced over the last few months. 1500

Carrying a lethal weapon onto church property was considered "inappropriate" under the policies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now, it's prohibited. The tweaked language can be seen in the church's "Handbook 2," which says: "Churches are dedicated for the worship of God and as havens from the cares and concerns of the world. With the exception of current law enforcement officers, the carrying of lethal weapons on church property, concealed or otherwise, is prohibited."The previous rule said the carrying of lethal weapons was inappropriate.Lethal weapons include a number of possible items including guns, said Daniel Woodruff,a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The handbook update took effect in the first week of August, Woodruff said, but the change will be formally communicated to local Church leaders as new meetinghouse safety guidelines in the near future. Those leaders will then be responsible for sharing the guidelines with their members, he added. The change applies to the entire church, but due to a Texas law change regarding firearms in places of worship, a letter referencing the prohibition was recently sent to church leaders in Texas and shared with members, Woodruff said.Next month, a new law will go into effect in Texas which will allow licensed handgun owners to legally carry their weapons in places of worship. It's one of a string of new firearm laws that will take effect across Texas next month, further loosening gun restrictions in a state that already has some of the most lax weapons laws in the nation. One of those laws will disallow school districts from prohibiting licensed gun owners -- including school employees -- from storing a firearm or ammunition in a locked vehicle on a school parking lot, as long as they're not in plain view. Another will allow foster homes to store firearms and ammunition in a safe and secure place for personal protection. The handbook tweak isn't the first change the church has seen in recent years. It's undergone many others, including dropping the moniker "Mormon," cutting an hour from Sunday church meetings, allowing missionaries to contact their families more often, ending the church's 100-year association with the Boy Scouts and dropping an anti-LGBT policy from 2015, saying children of same-sex couples can be baptized. 2365

Even before he became president, Donald Trump was no fan of the Oscars. "The Oscars are a sad joke, very much like our President. So many things are wrong!" Trump tweeted in 2015, just before announcing his run for president."I don't know how much longer I can take this bullsh*t - so terrible! #Oscars" Trump tweeted a year earlier.Well, if Trump were watching the 2019 show, he likely wouldn't be happy at some of the jokes made at his expense.Comedienne Maya Rudolph broke the ice early in the show by commenting on President Trump's recent national emergency declaration — a move he made in order to secure funding to build a border wall with Mexico."There is no host, no popular movie category and Mexico is not paying for the wall," Rudolph said. While introducing winner for Best Foreign Language Film, actor Javier Bardem also addressed Trump's proposed wall — doing so in Spanish.ABC translated Bardem's speech in real time."There are no borders or walls that can restrain ingenuity or talent. In any region of any continent, there are always great stories that move us. And tonight, we celebrate the excellence and importance of the cultures and languges of different countries," Bardem said.Immediately following Bardem's comments, comedian Keegan Michael Key appeared to poke fun at Trump after dropping into the Dolby Theater from the ceiling with an umbrella, a la Mary Poppins. After a few seconds of fiddling, Key simply laid the open umbrella on the ground — just as Trump did in 2018 when boarding Air Force One. 1541
