The parents of Otto Warmbier, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, will have dinner at the White House on Saturday night with President Donald Trump and Richard Grenell, the US ambassador to Germany, according to two administration sources.Otto Warmbier was an American college student who was held prisoner for 17 months by Pyongyang and died shortly after he was returned home in a comatose state in 2017.It's unclear how Saturday's dinner was planned and whether anyone else will join them. A spokesman for the National Security Council did not provide a comment.Grenell has been in Washington for the last few days and is one of the many contenders eyeing the national security adviser job, the sources say. But this dinner was planned before John Bolton was fired earlier this week.Grenell met with the Warmbiers when they visited Germany in August. He posted a photo of himself with Cindy Warmbier and his own mother on Instagram."Today I introduced Otto Warmbier's mother Cindy to my mom, Judi. Cindy is focused on bringing some justice to her family - and we are ready to help," Grenell wrote in his caption for the photo. After a second summit with Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, Vietnam, earlier this year, Trump said he does not hold the North Korean dictator responsible for Warmbier's death. The Warmbiers rejected Trump's remark."We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity. No excuses or lavish praise can change that. Thank you," the Warmbiers said in a statement at the time.Earlier this week Trump criticized Bolton for earlier comments he had made regarding North Korean denuclearization that angered Kim Jong Un."He's using that to make a deal with North Korea? And I don't blame Kim Jong Un for what he said after that, and he wanted nothing to do with John Bolton. And that's not a question of being tough. That's a question of being not smart to say something like that," Trump said. 2077
The United States Secret Service confirmed that a man set himself on fire in front of the White House on Friday, forcing officers to move the public back from the fence line. The US Secret Service closed pedestrian traffic near the White House. President Donald Trump was not under any threat by Friday's incident. "A male subject operating an electronic wheelchair-type scooter lit his outer jacket on fire while sitting along Pennsylvania Ave. outside the North Fence Line," the Secret Service said. "Uniformed Division Officers immediately responded, extinguished the fire and rendered first aid."The Secret Service said the man had what appears to be non-life threatening injuries. 698
The U.S. Air Force has released preliminary information on an inspection across the Air Force Academy grounds to determine if there elevated levels of chemicals found in firefighting foam and other industrial products in the ground and groundwater. As a result, the Air Force will begin inspecting drinking wells south of the Academy, including the Woodmen Valley area, for potential contamination. According to a release, the results show groundwater samples contain levels higher than the Environmental Protection Agency Lifetime Health Advisory, which allows for 70 parts per trillion. These compounds have not been detected in water supplied by Colorado Springs Utilities to the Air Force Academy, according to the release. The statement references voluntary sampling conducted in January showed results at or below the EPA limit of 10 parts per trillion for water supplies. As a result of the higher than acceptable levels found on-base, Air Force officials will now coordinate to test drinking water wells south of the government-owned property. The chemicals involved are Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), part of the family of 1185
The Trump administration is dropping its designation of China as a currency manipulator in advance of the signing Wednesday of a Phase 1 U.S.-China trade agreement. The preliminary pact that the two sides are set to sign includes a section that's intended to prevent China from manipulating its currency to gain trade advantages. The action announced Monday comes five months after the Trump administration had branded China a currency manipulator — the first time that any country had been so named since 1994 during the Clinton administration. 558
The U.S. military says two U.S. service members have been killed and two others injured when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan. In keeping with defense department rules, the U.S. military did not identify the service members. The Taliban immediately took responsibility for Saturday's attack. More than 2,400 U.S. service members have been killed in Afghanistan after 18 years of war. Last year was one of the deadliest for the United States, with 23 American troops killed, even as Washington engaged in peace talks with the Taliban. The insurgents now control or hold sway over roughly half of Afghanistan. 651
