(KGTV) - Hundreds gathered at a park in San Ysidro in support of the migrant caravan just hours before border officials closed the border.A group called the San Diego Migrant and Refugee Coalition organized the Sunday rally that eventually turned into a march. About 600 people joined the coalition which is made up of 20 migrant support and social justice groups. The organizers say they disagree with the militarization of the border and want the migrants to know they are loved and welcome. The march ended peacefully at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.  606

SEATTLE, Wash, -- Gwen Anderson says life for her and her daughter, Katja, was pretty tough even before COVID-19 hit.“I became disabled, I had a lot of medical issues. Once I became disabled, my doctor took me off of work, I lost my income,” said Anderson.She and Katja lived about 20 minutes south of Seattle and Katja was finishing up 8th grade.Then came the pandemic, an abrupt shutdown at school, and if that weren’t enough, financially, things went from bad to worse.“That was the hardest decision to make was to give up my apartment and to realize I couldn’t afford it any longer and to become homeless,” Anderson said.For Katja, it meant learning from home without a home. There was no consistency, and she says that was the hardest part.“Not being in contact with my teachers and having them help me, so I can ask questions,” said Katja.They moved into Mary’s Place, a homeless shelter that had to make adjustments during the pandemic as well.“COVID has created, basically, our entire service system and the work that we do and adjust every piece of it,”said James Flynn, the chief programming officer for Mary’s Place.He runs all the programs used by people that stay at the shelter. That includes assistance that helps students stay in school“Our youths services team are usually helping prepare folks for enrollment, getting ready for the school year, making sure everybody has what they need to feel prepared for the school year. Right now we’re really taking things day by day... making sure people have laptops, tablets, internet service. At the end of last school year here in our kids club areas we provided space for families who needed extra support to be able to have their kids come here and get some extra help,” said Flynn.There’s 2.5 million homeless kids in the U.S. today, many of whom, if they’re not able to stay in school, may not have access to the technology they need to stay connected.So far, Katja has been able to keep her school-issued laptop.“We still have our school laptops, we didn’t return them,” she said.Gwen worries about how being away from school and being homeless will affect her daughter beyond just academically.“She’s originally a shy person and that (school) helps her come out of her shell. So I would prefer for her to be in school and her to interact with her classmates and her teachers,” said Anderson.She says she will do what she has to get herself and Katja into a new home and keep Katja connected to her education. 2483

(KGTV) -- A 70-year-old U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was arrested Wednesday after prosecutors say he strangled a traveler in San Ysidro.Prosecutors say while on duty, Harvey Booker, 70, strangled a traveler at the San Ysidro Port of Entry that resulted in “bodily harm.”No details on what led up to the incident were released about the July 8 incident.“There is no excuse for law enforcement officials to abuse the significant trust and power placed in them,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “Law enforcement takes great pride in protecting the civil rights of all people. When that trust is betrayed, we must hold that officer accountable.”CBP responded with the following comment.“U.S. Customs and Border Protection stresses professionalism, honor and integrity in every aspect of our mission and does not tolerate actions by any employee that would tarnish the reputation of our agency,” said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations.The agency says they are cooperating with the FBI and DHS in the investigation. School districts across the country are being tasked with opening their campuses safely. Social distancing is a big part of that, but limited spacing at schools and a lack of available teachers is making that difficult."We are also having our students wear masks, as well, to keep our students and our staff healthy. I worked with superintendents across the state to compare plans and what they're following. Most of us are trying to keep that three foot distancing facing forward when possible and six foot distancing when we can, as well," said Jonathon Cooper, the Superintendent of Mason City Schools in Ohio. Cooper said each level of his district's plan aligns with the levels of coronavirus cases in their community. For example, if COVID-19 levels rise to a certain level, the district will move to having students in class only a couple days a week."The way that it is structured, is it’s every other day and so it creates consistency for our families and it allows our teachers to have 50% of the class in person that they can concentrate on, get them set up for the next day while the other 50% of their class comes in. It allows them to spread out in their classroom," Cooper explained.Many public school districts say they're dealing with reduced budgets, so hiring new teachers to ensure smaller class sizes is not a possibility. Plus, a lot of educators say even if they could hire teachers right now, there are not enough qualified candidates."This COVID-19 health crisis has really exposed inequities in many of our public institutions and definitely in our education system and it shows the reason why we don’t have that pool of new up and coming educators," said Manuel Bonilla, the president of the Fresno Teachers Association in California."We see it in all the documents from federal to state to local, that physical distancing is one of the things that needs to take place and we just don’t have the manpower to do so with teacher shortage," Bonilla said. He adds that many of the roughly 4,000 teachers in his city don't even feel comfortable taking on face-to-face learning in the classroom this fall. "When you just take a look at the CDC guidelines, the state guidelines and the local guidelines as to what you need in order to return safely in a classroom, physical setting, we know that by the start of school date we just can't do that," Bonilla said.And if teachers get sick, it may be hard or unsafe to find replacements. Bonilla is concerned with the availability and willingness of substitute teachers during this time. "See and that’s one of the points in regards to substitute teachers and the physical reopening of schools. When you take a look at the qualifications of quarantine and the subs moving from place to place and it's by the nature of their position they might be in different areas or causing that unsafe atmosphere just because there will be different contact points," says Bonilla.Districts are also worried that any lack of protections for teachers could further impact a teacher shortage.Back in Ohio, Cooper said, "We're also losing funding really quickly from our state. We’ve lost .2 million in the last four months. So when you’re losing money, you’re doing these amazingly new strategies to keep everybody safe and things we’ve never done before so we’re writing the script as we go,"The superintendent adds that many education administrators nationwide are leaning on each other now more than ever to make the right decisions when it comes to reopening schools this fall. 3541

SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A motorist was killed in a multi-vehicle crash this morning involving a semi truck on state Route 78 in San Marcos and another motorist suffered major injuries in a rollover crash around four-and-a-half hours later on the opposite side of the highway, authorities said.A semi truck was reportedly disabled around 12:15 a.m. in the left lane of eastbound state Route 78 west of Twin Oaks Valley Road, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.At 12:55 a.m., someone told dispatchers that a vehicle crashed into the back of the semi truck and the vehicle was totaled.The driver of the Honda CRV that struck the semi truck was killed in the crash, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said.CHECK 10NEWS TRAFFIC MAPAt 5:35 a.m., a crash between a Ford pickup and two other vehicles on westbound SR-78 west of Twin Oaks Valley Road caused the pickup to overturn and land on its roof, Doerr said.
