BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of tying a noose to a tree branch in Berkeley’s marina has been arrested and charged with a misdemeanor hate crime. Police said a person who works at the marina saw the man, later identified as Jaime Robledo-Espino tie a noose with some rope on Thursday. When confronted about the noose, the employee said Robledo-Espino fastened it to a tree branch and fled the area. The worker took a picture of the suspect and provided it to officers who later arrested him. She's also a registered nurse at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.The fridge is for anyone who needs fresh produce, baby food, or even a pre-packaged meal. She got all the logistics together starting in July and put the fridge out last week.Reardon said the fridge was a donation from a friend. Since then, a few others have offered to find fridges for the effort."The ultimate goal is to for there to be refrigerators all over the city, in every neighborhood, all over. Spreading mutual aid giving food to people that need it," said Reardon.It's a resource critical to Buffalo's east side, which is considered a food desert."It's hard to get fresh fruit and the natural resources that our families need for their children, so they have the proper nutrition," said Pastor Dwayne Jones, with Mt. Aaron Missionary Baptist Church.Pastor Jones, an advocate for getting produce to food deserts, said there's only one supermarket on the east side.He's been working on a local, state, and federal level to get more supermarkets to that area."We need a supermarket down on this part of the east side," he said. "Everybody needs an apple, fresh milk, everybody needs fresh milk, fresh produce."Right now, Reardon wants other people to get encouraged to host a refrigerator themselves, and she is more than willing to help them get started."Anyone can do this, absolutely. We're gonna figure it out,'" Metzger-Carter said Wednesday.Her son, who was going to be a ninja, settled for a SWAT officer costume they found at Target. Her daughter and her 10-year-old friend, whose family also evacuated, went to the Love on Haight boutique in the city's famed Haight-Ashbury neighborhood to put together hippie costumes."The people were so sweet to them. They found pants that will fit them. They were helping to cut them," Metzger-Carter said.Many families who live in and around wine country north of San Francisco have no neighborhood to bring their kids to collect candy because they're coming home to destruction, are still under evacuation orders or facing lingering power outages meant to prevent electrical equipment from starting fires in windy weather.And kids on the other side of San Francisco Bay, southeast of the Sonoma County blaze, are seeing Halloween plans literally go up in smoke."Today at work, our lunch conversation was: 'What are you going to do for Halloween if the air is not good?" said Hillary Sardinas, a field biologist in the Bay Area city of Albany. This time, they left Wednesday to make it in time for trick-or-treating, which is a "much bigger deal" to her oldest son."He was pretty upset when I told him we might not be able to trick-or-treat. His best friend already left town," Moren said. "I just want to make sure there's a way to make it happen."Moren's older son goes to a school with an annual Halloween parade. Around 400 costumed students walk around the playground and then around the block, Washington Elementary Principal Katia Hazen said.
