SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting Wednesday, Southwest Airlines is providing daily, nonstop service from San Diego International Airport to Honolulu.The inaugural flight departed at 8 a.m. from San Diego to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii."We've been anticipating this route for many months and welcome Southwest's new daily service to Honolulu," San Diego County Regional Airport Authority President and CEO Kimberly Becker said."There has always been high demand for leisure travel to both San Diego and Honolulu and, with a military presence in each city, a desire to visit friends and family," she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The pink, blue and white colors of the Transgender Flag will fly over the County Administration Center and the San Diego Convention Center Sails Pavilion at sundown Friday in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance.The Human Rights Campaign reports that so far in 2020 "at least 36 Transgender or gender non-conforming people have been killed by violent means, the majority of whom were Black and Latinx transgender women.""The lives of our Transgendered community members are too often violently taken just because of who they are," said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. "We cannot stay silent as the deaths of these humans continue to grow year by year. Lighting up these structures won't solve the challenges the Transgender community faces, but it is a step toward raising greater awareness and support for our Transgender neighbors."Fletcher, in partnership with the County of San Diego's LGBTQ&A Employee Resource Group and the African American Association of County Employees, championed securing the lighting of the iconic San Diego structures."To honor these victims and countless others, we stand in solidarity by lighting the CAC to remember each life lost," said Ben Parmentier, President of the County LGBTQ&A Employee Resource Group."The visibility this lighting provides is a small step to bring awareness to a grim reality for one of the most vulnerable populations in our society. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county's flu death toll inched closer to 70 last week, while lab-confirmed flu cases continued to decline, the county's Health and Human Services announced today.The county received one report of a flu-related death last week, a 74-year-old North County man who had additional medical issues. County health officials did not disclose whether he had received this flu season's vaccine. The county's flu death toll now sits at 68.The county confirmed 86 flu cases last week, down from 114 cases during the prior week. Confirmed flu cases have declined for six consecutive weeks since reaching a season-high of 692 in mid-March. County health officials have now confirmed 9,373 flu cases to date this season."Flu activity in the region continues to wane, but it is still elevated for this time of year,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.While flu season appears to be wrapping up, county health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors today voted unanimously to make San Diego County's million Small Business Stimulus Grant program available to all businesses affected by COVID-19 safety restrictions.Supervisors voted to expand the small business relief program via teleconference after hearing an update on the county's efforts to combat the spread of the virus as well as information about future vaccine distribution.They also heard from numerous businesses owners angry over the newest state restrictions mandated by Gov. Gavin Newsom.The restrictions, which went into effect at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, were triggered when intensive-care unit bed availability remained below 15% afterSaturday's daily update, according to the California Department of Public Health. New infections and hospitalizations from the coronavirus have surged in San Diego County, which reported its third-highest daily total of COVID-19 cases on Monday with 1,998.It was the seventh consecutive day with more than 1,000 new cases and the 15th time in the last 18 days. A record 2,287 infections were reported Friday. The cases reported Monday bring the county's cumulative total to 94,169.No new deaths were reported Monday with the total remaining at 1,062.
