BORREGO SPRINGS (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric will use a .5 million federal grant to upgrade the Borrego Springs microgrid with new technology so it can operate on completely clean energy, the utility announced Friday.The grant, from the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Office, will provide funds to purchase smart power inverters, controls and an energy management system. The new devices will improve energy reliability, stabilize the microgrid and help it become 100% renewable.A microgrid is a mini power grid and may include a power source like solar energy, an energy storage component and controls and switches that allow it to operate independent of or parallel to the larger grid. The Borrego Springs microgrid is the first such utility-owned grid in the nation."This grant award comes at a pivotal time for our customers, our company and the next evolution of microgrid technology," said Will Speer, vice president of electric engineering and construction for SDG&E. "Microgrids are one of the tools to enhance community resiliency and maintain energy service during emergencies. With the smart grid technology that we will incorporate into the microgrid, we are confident that this facility can become a model for future clean energy microgrids."The Borrego Springs microgrid began operations in 2013 after SDG&E saw an opportunity to improve energy resiliency for the approximately 2,800 people in Borrego Springs -- a remote desert town subject to extreme heat and monsoonal weather. Until then, the town relied on a single transmission line and distribution circuit for its power. The microgrid is connected to a local 26-megawatt solar field -- owned by a third party -- two battery storage systems, two generators and an ultracapacitor to keep power flowing to the town during emergencies and planned outages on the larger grid."This is great news for Borrego Springs, especially during emergencies like severe weather," said County Supervisor Jim Desmond. "It's important for San Diego County that we continue to move towards a healthier and more sustainable future."Due to unstable voltage conditions and solar energy output fluctuations, it is challenging to operate the microgrid using 100% clean energy. The new inverter, controls and energy management system will help address these challenges and transition the microgrid to a true 100% clean energy facility.SDG&E operates two microgrids -- including the Borrego Springs location -- within San Diego and southern Orange counties. Maybe I can use that patio during the day,’” Armatas said. “So, I got in contact with Matt.”Matt Ruff is the general manager and part owner of Dazzle, one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world.“It’s kind of foolish not to lend our neighbors a hand during this time,” Ruff said.Ruff is lending Dazzle’s outdoor patio space to Sam’s during the day for free, a move customers seem to appreciate while industry experts are calling it a financial Band-Aid.According to the National Restaurant Association, somewhere between 15,000 to 20,000 restaurants across the country closed their doors for good during this pandemic.Experts expect that number to increase nationwide as an estimated 8,000,000 American service industry workers are already out of jobs.“We’re monthly doing the revenue we would do on a good Saturday,” Ruff said. “How do you survive with doing something like that?”So far, this partnership with Dazzle and Sam’s sharing space seems to be working out well for both businesses.“It’s been awesome,” Armatas said. ”It’s an additional 12 to 15 seats that we didn’t have before.”The plan is to continue sharing this space until these establishments are able to operate at full capacity or the weather no longer allows for outdoor seating. 2020

Safeway has since apologized for what the store said was a misunderstanding.Erika Martin told CNN that the incident occurred when she stopped at the store last month to help a homeless man she knew hung out there. She gave him a bag of dog food and some treats for his pit bull. Her two sisters were also there and gave two men care packages with soap, toothpaste, hand sanitizer and other hygiene products."I help the homeless as much as I can. I see homeless people weekly and I try help them the best that I can," Martin said.Martin said her son, who's about to turn 10, and her nieces and nephews went into the store to see if the bakery was giving out free cookies and to get samples from the deli.Martin stayed outside and talked to her sisters and the man to whom she gave the dog food.She said a Safeway employee came out of the store, looked directly at her and rushed back inside, which she thought was strange.As Martin prepared to leave, two police cars drove up and one stopped behind her so she couldn't back out of her parking place. They asked why she was there and if she had any warrants, Martin said. She told them that she'd never even had a parking ticket.Mountain View Police spokeswoman Katie Nelson said that a Safeway employee called the police and to report a theft in progress. Five officers were dispatched to interview store employees and the Martin family."It was extremely clear to us that no one who had been identified was potentially involved in any sort of criminal activity, and we explicitly said as much to Safeway employees," Nelson said.One of the officers told Martin that Safeway had called the police because she matched the description of someone taking items from the store and said the suspect was wearing a spaghetti-strap shirt.Martin said she was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt that said "Y'all need Jesus," and had not even gone into the store. Nelson said the description "somewhat matched" the top one of Martin's sisters was wearing.The employee told the police that the children were running back and forth to a car parked outside."During the initial dispatch call, a Safeway employee informed our dispatcher that both employees and customers believed a man and a woman as well as children were working together to try and take items from the store," Nelson said.Martin said the questioning scared her son and he started crying while talking to one of the officers.He told her that when the children asked for cookies the woman at the bakery counter told him that "We don't have anymore cookies to give to you," Martin said. He said they looked behind the counter and saw that there were cookies back there.The officer asked if they had taken any cookies and he said no."My son was crying so much, he was so scared because he thought he did something wrong. He thought the police were going to arrest him for looking behind the counter," she said. "To see my child in so much fear broke my heart."She said police let them go after about 30 minutes"In that short amount of time, we not only determined that no crime occurred, we explicitly told Safeway employees as such. None of the people Safeway identified in their call to us nor in their subsequent interview with us committed any crime whatsoever," Nelson said."We were very appreciative of the way the family allowed our officers to wrap up the call, and we apologized for inconveniencing their evening," she said.After one of Martin's sisters, Faith Martin-Ware, posted a video of the July 8 incident on Facebook, news outlets began picking up on the story.Martin said she and her sisters had shopped at that store three or four times a week but are not comfortable going back there now."We were there to do a good deed and we left feeling humiliated, embarrassed, hurt and shocked," she said.Safeway spokeswoman Wendy Gutshall said in a statement that employees called police because a man suspected of shoplifting there in the past was in the store."Safeway has reached out to Ms. Martin to sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding, and we look forward to continuing the discussion regarding her concerns. BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) - Three-time Grammy-nominated rapper Offset was detained by Beverly Hills police Saturday during the weekly pro-Trump demonstration and released, while wife Cardi B's cousin was arrested on concealed weapon charges.Offset, aka Kiari Kendrell Cepus, livestreamed his police dealings on Instagram just after 5 p.m.He is seen telling officers he won't put up his hands "because you got guns out. I am not gonna move my hands from the steering wheel."A female officer is heard explaining that "We were told that you guys were waving guns."Offset told police "You just watched someone beat my car up with a flag."Officers are shown opening the car door as Offset claims it is illegal.The livestream ends as officers pull him out of the car. TMZ reported he was placed in handcuffs.But Offset was not arrested, Beverly Hills police Sgt. A. Alatorre told City News Service. "We made an arrest but it was not him," she said.Alatorre said that Marcelo Almanzar was arrested for suspicion of possession of a loaded concealed weapon.She confirmed the incident was in and around the weekly pro-Trump rally that starts and finishes at the Beverly Hills sign in Beverly Gardens Park, at 9439 Santa Monica Blvd.More details were released by police Lt. BEECH GROVE, Ind. — A man has been arrested after he recorded himself dumping a bag of flour onto the head of a 68-year-old woman at a Beech Grove, Indiana Walmart on Wednesday. An off-duty IMPD officer working at the Walmart on Emerson Avenue just after 10 a.m. when he was informed of the incident. The 68-year-old woman was shopping in the store when a man she didn't know snuck up behind her and dumped an entire bag of flour on her head. The suspect, Phillip Weaver, 22, recorded the incident on Facebook Live and shared it on his social media page. Weaver was arrested Thursday afternoon. He's been preliminarily charged with battery, theft, theft of a firearm and criminal mischief in reference to that incident. Final charges will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor's office. The incident remains under investigation.  A quick view at Weaver's social media pages shows that he regularly records himself doing what he calls "pranks" to other people in public places and shares them with his followers.
