(KGTV)- A bike giveaway in National City will go on during the Pandemic, continuing a five decade tradition of helping low-income families in Southern San Diego."The motorcycle community steps up to the plate every year," says organizer Brian "Snowman" Trum, with the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club. "This year was pretty grim with the COVID and everything."Traditionally, people line up in National City for the giveaway. Some even camp out over night. The motorcycle club gives away hundreds of bikes and toys every year.But County health restrictions make much of that impossible during the Pandemic.Trum says his group made sweeping changes to the way they'll do the event this year, to keep everyone safe."We have masks to give away for people who don't have them. We'll have tape in the street for where you can stand, where you shouldn't stand. And we have gallons of hand sanitizer," he says.Santa will also make an appearance, but this year he'll be behind a booth to keep social distance. In addition to the physical aspects of running the bike giveaway, the Pandemic also brought problems with donations. Trum says his group usually starts buying and building bikes before Thanksgiving, but this year they had no money at that time.Some late donations helped salvage the event, showing how generous the community can be."After a couple weeks, money started coming in. We got some really generous donations by people we've known who have helped us out over the years. So it looks like we're going to have a great Christmas," says Trum. 1574

MOUNDS, Okla. — Logan Phillips said he was inspired during the teacher walkout and signed up to run for Oklahoma's House District 24 seat on a whim.Phillips figured he would lose, but began legwork for a campaign in 2020. His opponent was 10-year incumbent Steve Kouplan, the Democratic minority leader."I didn't think I had a chance going against Goliath. He could outspend me, out-market me and do pretty much anything when it came to money. So it was just me talking to people," Phillips said.Phillips sat at Mamadou's Restaurant in Glenpool, Oklahoma by himself to watch the results come in on election night. He said even his wife went home early. But the Republican stayed neck in neck with the incumbent all evening."Then the polls and stuff actually went down. So they stopped reporting for about 10 minutes and we were stuck on the last four counties. I was losing within half a point. Then they all came in at the same time and I went up and won by 350 votes," Phillips said.Phillips said he spoke with a couple other lawmakers and put a few posts on social media. That was the extent of his campaign."Straight party voting was huge for the Republican party. They came out and they wanted the Republicans in and I was the Republican. That accounted for 50-something percent of my votes," Phillips said.The representative-elect is a teacher at Tulsa Community College. His father, sister and stepmother are also educators. The family tells KJRH they're excited for new faces at the state capitol."I'm certainly anticipating some great changes. That we could go from being the last in something to being the first in something. She said Kris is the reason why she is alive today.“I almost didn’t make it. If we didn’t have the plasma, I wouldn’t be here, just thankful,” said Unique.In May, Kris tested positive for COVID-19 and recovered.
