SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Signs posted at the Cowles Mountain trailhead warned San Diego hikers to leave their dogs at home during hot weather. While only three miles long, the trail in Mission Trails Regional Park is steep and often rocky, with no shade. During the cooler months, the trail is popular for dog owners. County experts say dogs with short snouts, like bulldogs, pugs, and Boston terriers, can have difficulty catching their breath in hot weather. The high heat also puts stress on puppies, older dogs, and overweight pets. Experts recommend :Exercise in the early morning and return before midday.Consider your dog’s fitness level. Match the trail with his endurance in mind.Take more water than you think you’ll need and a water bowl.Take plenty of breaks, preferably in the shade.Check your dog’s paws regularly to make sure they’re not getting burned.Watch for signs of dehydration or heatstroke. They can include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness or bright red gums, refusal to walk further, collapse, shaking, shock and seizures. If your dog suffers any of these symptoms, stop, preferably in the shade, and offer water. Try to cool your dog off by pouring water over them and then take your pet to the nearest vet.Never leave your dog in the car during summer-like temperatures. On an 85-degree day, a car can reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes and soar upward to 120 degrees –even with the windows down an inch or two. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some former students of Brightwood College finally have something to celebrate after their school shut down earlier this month.Town & Country San Diego Mission Valley, where the graduation was scheduled to held, will now host the ceremony free of charge.Karlene Carpenter is one of those students looking forward to the graduation ceremony. She spent countless hours with her classmates, studying and preparing for the next phase of their lives. "The curiculum was amazing. This happened a few days before Carpenter was scheduled to finish the program. Teachers stepped in to help. Carpenter said some clinical instructors worked for free to help them finish. At first, it looked like the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 18th at Town & Country San Diego in Mission Valley was not going to happen since the school was out of business."We still had the date booked, but there was no way to pay for it," Carpenter said. "I went to school a little later in life. You want to walk across that stage, you want to wear your cap and gown, you want to participate in the pinning ceremony inducting you into nursing."Then came a little holiday cheer thanks to Santa's helpers, in the form of Town & Country staff. "We have extended to them a complimentary graduation. Everyone in their families can see them and just really enjoy what they worked so hard for," said Susan Penman, director of sales and marketing at the facility. From stressful classes to a sudden college shutdown, it was the news Carpenter was more than happy to hear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My entire class and all of these students are just elated. It was basically a Christmas miracle," she said. 1988

And now Marian Walter is getting the red carpet treatment for her 106th birthday.Staff at Merrill Gardens at Oceanside say they were shocked to learn Walter was turning 106 because she's one of the most alive, intelligent, and funny people they've ever met.Walter was born in Brooklyn in 1913 and went on to earn a PhD. in Romance Languages and Literature at the University of North Carolina. She speaks seven languages and loved traveling the world. "Italy has just everything in the way of art, you know? It was wonderful. I hated to leave there!" said Walter. Her advice on staying forever-young is to work hard and never stop learning. "Learn as much as you can under any conditions you can do it!" said Walter.As for her birthday wish for the world, "Happiness, decentness. God wants us all to get along with one another. To help one another. To understand one another." Walter has two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The Mayor of Oceanside also paid a visit to Walter, honoring her with a certificate of recognition. 1142

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s Planning Commission met Thursday to discuss potential new rules that would help regulate the short-term rental industry in the city.A plan proposed by City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell was first introduced in July after a compromise was reached among members of the hospitality industry and short-term rental companies.The plan would implement tighter restrictions such as capping the number of short-term rental permits that are granted. There are also plans to require a two-night minimum stay to avoid one-night stays that are often connected to big parties that concerns residents.A representative for Campbell says implementing tighter regulations will help law enforcement address any problems that may arise.The proposed plan creates penalties and fines for those who violate the city’s “good neighbor” policy.More than 500 people signed up to voice their opinion about this proposal during Thursday’s virtual meeting.One caller said, “We depend on this for our livelihood, especially since the pandemic has taken a toll on us already. Without having the ability to host, many of us will be forced to leave our homes.”Another caller added, “This has been an issue for years. It’s now time to act and bring it to a close.”The next step will be to send the proposal to the full City Council for review. 1350
