The Internal Revenue Service issued a warning Friday about a new twist on the usual impersonation phone scam. Officials say criminals are faking calls from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), an independent organization within the IRS. Similar to other IRS impersonation scams, the con artist makes unsolicited calls to the victim, falsely claiming to be from the IRS. But now scammers have discovered a way to "spoof" the phone number of the TAS office in Houston or New York. The victim answers or returns the call, the criminal requests personal information, including a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number. The TAS office helps taxpayers resolve IRS issues, such as sudden financial difficulty, but does not call residents out of the blue. Characteristics of the calls are: Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers to identify themselves.Scammers may know the last four digits of the taxpayer’s Social Security number.Scammers spoof caller ID to make the phone number appear as if the IRS or another local law enforcement agency is calling.Scammers may send bogus IRS emails to victims to support their bogus calls.Victims hear background noise of other calls to mimic a call site. After threatening victims with jail time or with driver’s license or other professional license revocation, scammers hang up. Others soon call back pretending to be from local law enforcement agencies or the Department of Motor Vehicles, and caller ID again supports their claim. The IRS will never: Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.Call about an unexpected refund. For taxpayers who don’t owe taxes or don’t think they do:Please report IRS or Treasury-related fraudulent calls to phishing@irs.gov (Subject: IRS Phone Scam).Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately. The longer the con artist is engaged; the more opportunity he/she believes exists, potentially prompting more calls.Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page. Alternatively, call 1-800-366-4484.Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes. For those who owe taxes or think they do:Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help.View tax account online. Taxpayers can see their past 24 months of payment history, payoff amount and balance of each tax year owed.Click 2888

The ongoing feud between Twitter and President Donald Trump is raising questions about censorship and free speech. The latest incident involves Twitter's removal of a tribute video to George Floyd that the president tweeted from his campaign account. Twitter cited copyright complaints. The video is still on YouTube and Facebook. Before that, Twitter fact-checked and hid some of the president's tweets about mail-in voting fraud and another tweet regarding "looting and shooting," saying it was glorifying violence. Meanwhile, the same post on the president's Facebook account was not removed.Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has maintained that though the company removes posts that incite violence, the president's post did not violate that policy. That decision led to the resignation of a former Facebook software engineer."So, we've seen politicians incite violence in Myanmar and in the Philippines. And many, many people have died. People from these countries know that social media can be dangerous,” said Roy Gutterman, Director of the Tully Center for Free Speech. We've also witnessed more private citizens on social media complaining since the protesting began that their comments are being flagged more or their accounts are being temporarily disabled. “I wouldn’t call these cases of censorship or violation of first amendment because you have to have actual government action,” said Gutterman.Gutterman also said social media companies have a legal right to flag or moderate any content, but they've operated for the most part under the principals of free speech and free flow of information.“We're congregating, we're meeting on social media and that's where you can reach an infinite audience for your viewpoint and in some sense that's beautiful. That’s beautiful,” said Gutterman. Gutterman reminded us of the risk of anonymity regarding social media and to pay attention to sourcing on everything you see. 1933

The gunman who opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California over the weekend likely acted alone, police said Tuesday. He was seen by himself in surveillance footage retrieved from the stores he visited before the shooting, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee told reporters."Our investigation is leading us more and more to believe that there was not a second person involved," Smithee said. "I don't think I could say that with absolute certainty at this point because we're still following up leads."Shortly after the attack, authorities said that they were searching for a second gunman who witnesses said may have been involved in the shooting. But Smithee later said multiple people gave differing descriptions of that person. The shooter, identified as Santino William Legan, 19, cut through a back fence to get into the festival in Gilroy's Christmas Hill Park on Sunday and began shooting at random, Smithee said. Legan killed three people and injured at least 12 others with an assault-style rifle he bought in Nevada weeks earlier, authorities said.Police killed the shooter within a minute of him opening fire.Smithee said authorities found a shotgun in the suspect's car, which was parked just northeast of the park. A bag was recovered with additional ammunition from an area by a creek, the police chief said. After the shooting, the FBI and Mineral County Sheriff's deputies searched a Walker, Nevada, residence believed to be used by the shooter and found several items including empty ammunition boxes, a sack of ammunition casings and a bag containing pamphlets on guns, according to court papers authorities filed with the Hawthorne Justice Court. The mass shooting at the popular food festival in the city about 30 miles southeast of San Jose claimed the lives of 6-year-old Stephen Romero, 13-year-old Keyla Salazar and Trevor Irby, a 2017 college graduate.Authorities continue to seek tips from the public as the investigation progresses. 1985

The 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee champions have been named! Yes, there were more than one. In fact, there were a whopping EIGHT champions! For the first time ever in Scripps National Spelling Bee history, more than two Scripps National Spelling Bee champions were named. In a surprise announcement after Round 17 of the competition, official pronouncer Dr. Jacques Bailly announced there would only be three more rounds. “We are throwing the dictionary at you, and you are showing the dictionary who is boss,” says Dr. Bailly to the remaining spellers. The audience erupted in applause and gave a standing ovation to the eight incredible spellers, who remained as of 11:35 p.m. EST. They were Rishik Gandhasri of California, Erin Howard of Alabama, Saketh Sundar of Maryland, Shruthika Padhy of New Jersey, Sohum Sukhatankar of Texas, Abhijay Kodali of Texas, Christopher Serrao of Pennsylvania and Rohan Raja of Texas. Scripps Company, presented the new Scripps National Spelling Bee championship trophy to the eight winners. All the winners' names will be on this year's trophy. “Once again, the Bee was a thrilling competition that showcased the young spellers’ vast knowledge of vocabulary alongside their poise and composure,” said Symson. “These winners are tremendous champions deserving of the prizes, opportunities and recognition coming their way. Scripps takes great pride in seeing the positive influence the Bee has on millions of children across the U.S. and the world, and tonight’s historic competition is an excellent example of this.”Following the competition, the eight winners reacted to the historic moment they all were declared champions. “I really didn’t wanna be the one who didn’t make it to the championship, so yeah, that would’ve been really embarrassing,” says Erin Howard of Alabama. “But fortunately, that didn’t really happen to any of us.”“I was excited, pressured and worried,” Abhijay Kodali of Texas. Each winner will receive a ,000 cash prize. They will also travel to New York City to appear on Live with Kelly and Ryan and to Hollywood to be on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!It was a record-setting 92nd running of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with the number of spellers in the competition, the amount of the cash prize, and now, eight spelling champions. “This is a night to celebrate the remarkable academic achievement of a group of the world’s most talented spellers,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “These spellers have conquered the dictionary unequivocally with their ability, skill and command of the English language. It’s an incredible achievement, and we salute all the years of hard work and dedicated study that brought these intelligent young people to the world stage. We congratulate them all.” 3746
