SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived in its new home port of San Diego Monday, bringing thousands of sailors and hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated annual economic impact for the region.The Navy will relocate another carrier strike group, the USS Carl Vinson, to San Diego this summer, giving the city three carriers for the first time in a decade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The views from atop of the old light house at Point Loma are off limits to virtually everyone most of the year except two particular twin sisters.Kim Falhlen and Karen Scanlon are volunteers at Cabrillo National Monument.The 67-year-old sisters are tasked with cleaning the rare glass lenses at the top of the lighthouse among other duties for the open tower days held only 3 days a year.“It’s almost in a constant need of repair,” said Kim Fahlen, “the tower wasn’t built for today’s activity.”The sisters grew up in Ohio and say they plan on helping at the tower as long as the park rangers at Cabrillo will let them.“We’re good for a while,” said Karen Scanlon, “we’ll keep doing this until they make us take a desk job.” 756

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This holiday season, shopping local is what will keep San Diego small businesses alive.The US Census conducted a small business survey showing a third of San Diego businesses were negatively impacted by the pandemic. The effect is visible downtown."The pandemic has definitely taken a toll on the neighborhood, I mean we've had some closures," Gaslamp Quarter Executive Director Association Michael Trimble said.Trimble said four to eight restaurants closed since March in the Gaslamp Quarter alone."Not a large percentage but still any business lost is unfortunately a business that we mourn is not here," he said.While the holiday sale signs are out, the usual crowds brought in with conventions and tourism are nowhere to be seen.Trimble said locals are vital to keeping retail and restaurants alive this holiday season."Watching all these small businesses shut down or close forever during the pandemic, it's just been really sad. So, I don't have a ton of money but Amazon doesn't need my money. You know what I mean? Like, if I can help these little shops with my or my that's just a much better use of my time," Pacific Beach Resident Bree Steffen said.When the pandemic started Steffen pledged to only shop small. She deleted her Amazon app and started exploring her neighborhood, "I feel like this whole underworld of San Diego opened up for me once I started looking at the smaller shops."She said it was a more personal experience, where she found unique gifts that had more emotional value from being hand-crafted.She launched her own small photography business in October.Now she relies on people like her to change their habits and think small."I feel like each time I at least give them a little business it just gives them a little more hope to keep going on and it's like if 100 people give them then that's enough for them to try to weather this storm," she said hopeful it will end soon.Trimble said on November 28th, also known as Small Business Saturday, if you take a picture while shopping or in the area and tag @GaslampQuarter on Instagram you will be entered to win a gift card from local establishments.Trimble said there has been one silver lining of the pandemic and that was testing the outdoor dining concept on Fifth Avenue out of necessity.That paved the way for a long coveted project to turn Fifth Avenue into a promenade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The United State Marine Corps is ordering the removal of the Confederate battle flag from public display and in work spaces aboard its installations, such as Camp Pendleton.The announcement was made late Friday night amid fiery protests across the country against racism and police killings."Today, the Marine Corps released guidance on the removal of public displays of the Confederate battle flag," read a post on USMC's official Twitter account.The order bans all depictions of the Confederate battle flag, including clothing, posters, mugs, bumper stickers, and the flag itself."Our history as a nation, and events like the violence in Charlottesville in 2017, highlight the divisiveness the use of the Confederate battle flag has had on our society," said USMC. "This presents a threat to our core values, unit cohesion, security, and good order and discipline."In 2017, white nationalists groups rallied against the proposed removal of a statue of Confederate soldier Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville. It was one of several controversial monuments targeted for removal following a massacre two years earlier in which a white supremacist gunned down nine black church members in Charleston. The rally saw violent clashes, including the death of a 32-year-old woman who was killed when a car rammed into a group of counter-protesters.USMC allows for the flag to be displayed in works of art, educational or historical displays depicting a Civil War battle where the flag is present but not the main focus of the work. It also does not ban the display of state flags and license plates which incorporate the Confederate battle flag."It is impossible to specify every possible exception that may apply. Commanders are expected to apply their best judgment informed by the spirit and intent of this maradmin," said USMC. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The South Park neighborhood has a new ornament for the holiday season, which residents hope will become a permanent addition.The South Park Business Group recently installed a new sign of the community's name on top of a building at the end of Fern Street."It gives people a little more of a talking point," says Tanya McAnear, who owns Bad Madge and Company nearby. "Having a branded neighborhood helps when you're on social media."The sign is part of this year's Holiday Walkabout Luminaria event on December 7. But people in the neighborhood hope the business group keeps it up as a permanent addition."I'd like to see it stay for a long time," says Wayne Prunkard, who has lived in South Park for 20 years. "It gives an atmosphere to the neighborhood, and I really like it."People in South Park have been clamoring for a sign like this for years, one that can help identify the area in the same way signs in University Heights, Normal Park, North Park, Hillcrest, Kensington, Barrio Logan, and Gaslamp do.The South Park Business Group paid for the sign. Organizers say they're looking into a way to make it permanent."It makes you stand out. It makes you unique," says Grace Gerber, the manager of Native Poppy. "It draws people's eyes in, and that would be huge for us."The lights on the sign will turn on for the first time at 5:30 pm on Saturday, December 7. 1392
