SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Like Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and many others, INOVIO Pharmaceuticals has also raced to develop a COVID-19 vaccine this year.“We’ve been working really hard to move our vaccine through the stages of clinical testing. Some things have taken a little bit longer than we hoped. I think that’s kind of always the case when you’re trying to go at great light speed,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, INOVIO Pharmaceuticals Senior VP of Research & Development based in San Diego.Broderick said with funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, the biotech company started its Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating its DNA vaccine candidate, INO-4800.The first U.S. participants received a dose of the experimental vaccine earlier this month. Approximately 400 adults in the U.S. are expected to be enrolled in the trial by the end of the month.“We hope that in the early part of 2021, we’ll be going into a really large Phase 3 trial where we’re asking the question does our vaccine protect against the disease itself,” she said.Broderick said the company hopes to enroll about 6,000 participants initially in its Phase 3 trial once they get the green light to begin.A press release from the company last week stated that “The Phase 3 segment of the INNOVATE remains on partial clinical hold until INOVIO satisfactorily resolves the FDA’s remaining questions related to the CELLECTRA 2000 device that will be used to deliver INO-4800 into the cells of the skin.”Earlier data released from Pfizer and Moderna’s studies showing high vaccine efficacy was positive news for INOVIO.“We feel that we’re in a really good place. According to the city, all 46 lifeguard and pool management positions are available at 13 different facilities. Anyone interested has to attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming skills and qualify to enroll in the city’s lifeguard training program. The course teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. The program costs 1 and scholarships are available, the city says. Participants who graduate the program will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Air certifications and will qualify to work as a lifeguard at city pools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mariah Sunshine Coogan's family says she lived up to her middle name. "She would walk into a room, and she would just light it up," her mother, Stacey Coogan, told 10News. The 23-year-old died Monday night when a plane carrying her and six others crashed in Scottsdale, Arizona. A special check presentation of ,000 was also made to Ronald McDonald House. The park says the new Duplo Playtown will give guests the best views of Miniland U.S.A. from high atop the theme park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a nervewracking place: on stage, behind the mic, looking out at a sea of people waiting for your punch line.The Comedy Palace in Kearny Mesa sees many comedians but not like the one who performed Friday night."It was something I thought about even in college but lacked the courage to do it," said Michael Schmid. "I always loved to make people laugh."Schmid always had the passion, but it was a recent visit to the doctor that gave him the courage he had been lacking."If not now, when," Schmid said.Three years ago, he was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis, a condition similar to ALS."It had spread to my upper body and becoming more quadriplegic," Schmid said.One month ago, he made the toughest decision of his life."The most difficult thing I ever had to do in my life was to talk to my children about ending my life."Schmid says he will end his life on December 27, citing severe pain. He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,'" said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night.
