KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man whose wife was found dismembered in two ice coolers has been charged in connection with dismembering and abandoning her body. Justin Rey is accused of abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.  Lenexa police officers went to U-Haul on October 24 to check on Rey and his two children, who were reportedly sleeping in a storage unit. During the investigation, a woman’s remains were found in the unit. Court documents officially identified the remains as Rey’s wife. The documents said Rey’s wife, who family identified as Jessica Monteiro Rey, was found dismembered in coolers. According to court records, Rey was dragging several containers at the U-Haul facility when police spoke to him. Rey told officers his wife died after childbirth several days earlier, and her body was in the two containers. Court documents said Rey told police he spent two days with his wife’s body before dismembering her. Rey told detectives his two children were in the hotel room as he dismembered and disposed of his wife’s body. Prosecutors requested a bond of 0,000 cash. Rey is in custody in Johnson County. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said the case remains under investigation.  1281

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGT) - An historic hiking trail in La Jolla will reopen after a 30-year battle with homeowners. The Princess Street trail goes from the top of the cliff at Princess Street to the water near La Jolla Shores. For years, access to the path had been closed because of a dispute over who owned the land leading to the trail.A homeowner claimed it was on their property and put up a gate blocking access to the trail. Over the years, brush and vegetation had overgrown the trail, making it impossible to hike on.In 2012, the Coastal Commission ruled that the gate was on public land and must be reopened. Now, the Environmental Center of San Diego is overseeing the revitalization and eventual reopening of the trail."Access to the coast is the one public right that we can hold," says Pam Heatherington with the Environmental Center. "We want to get kids out into the natural world. If this is a small part of that, we're up for it."People who live along Princess Street are split on their feelings about the trail. Melinda Merryweather says she remembers using it in the 1960s and wants her grandkids to enjoy it as well. She's been fighting for it to reopen for 23 years."It was a terrible injustice," she says of the gate that blocked access. "It's just so heart-filling to now see this as a reality.""I've been on record that I don't like it," says Dave Reynolds. He and his family have lived in a house next to the trail for four generations. He thinks reopening it will bring a litany of problems to the neighborhood."Safety, possible illegal activity, increased traffic, trash," he says of the issues he foresees. "But it is what it is. We're not happy about it, but there's nothing we can do about it."Supporters say it won't draw crowds, as it goes to an area only popular with divers and local surfers. They say people who want a traditional beach experience will still go to La Jolla Shores nearby. They also say having the trail will allow for easier rescues when people get trapped by the rising tides along the cove. The Environmental Center is now using a ,000 grant to clear the brush on the trail to within 6 inches of the ground. That will allow for a topographical survey, then a design team will create a new path down to the coast. After that, they hope to have the new trail built and open by the end of 2020. 2350

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - After serving the beach communities of Pacific Beach and La Jolla for more than 60 years, Pernicano’s Family Restaurant will be closing.Johnny Pernicano Sr., the restaurant's enigmatic founder, still comes every night, singing to patrons with his piano and accordion.“I learned how to play all the instruments just by being here every night,” said Pernicano. He and his nine brothers began opening restaurants across San Diego after World War II. As the youngest son, he started off making pizzas in his older brother’s restaurant. But by the mid ’50s, he went off on his own to build the restaurant that’s now on Turquoise Street on the southern edge of La Jolla.Since then, it’s served as the reliable home for birthdays, reunions, fundraisers and family dinners across San Diego. It’s one of three surviving Pericano’s in the county. Two of his nephews, now in their 70's, operate locations in El Cajon and Poway. They will remain open for the foreseeable future. The location on Turquoise Street will have its last day on Sept. 15.Johnny says he has leased the space out to a new family who plans on opening a new restaurant at the location. 1186
