(KGTV) -- After being under a federally mandated quarantine at MCAS Miramar for two weeks, Steven and Michele Smith are finally heading home to Paradise, California."Tomorrow morning we're putting our bags on the other side of that door and we're heading on a bus to the airport. We're going to rent a car and drive 600 miles home," said Steven Smith in a Skype interview with 10News.The two would have been back home weeks ago after their planned cruise to Hawaii, but due to a coronavirus outbreak on the Grand Princess cruise ship they were on, they and all other passengers had to go into quarantine once their ship finally docked in Oakland."My sister is taking care of my birds, my daughter is taking care of my dog, and then my friend is taking care of our cat," said Michele Smith.The Smiths will complete their 14-day quarantine Tuesday and drive home Wednesday. Health and Human Services officials tell us nearly 50 people quarantined at Miramar left Tuesday, and the remaining 130 people will be discharged over the next two days. For nearly two weeks, their temperatures were checked twice a day. The Smiths mostly remained inside of a room at the Consolidated Bachelor Quarters on base, had food delivered three times a day, and only stepped outside occasionally."You can go out and walk outside, they have a fenced-in area that they keep us inside of," said Steven Smith.They were tested for COVID-19 and got their results back Monday."It was just a weird test, to have somebody shove something up your nose that far back into your nasal cavity," Steven Smith explained."But we tested negative!" added an excited Michele. "So, we are virus free 100 percent."They are thrilled to be heading home healthy and say their positive attitude and sense of humor helped get them through this unusual time.Michele leaves others just starting their quarantine with this advice, "I would recommend to all the people out there, now is not the time to bring up negative things or things that could create conflict, but just to love on each other, laugh and enjoy each other." 2101

San Diego Democratic delegate Jess Durfee has attended the last four of his party's conventions to select the presidential nominee.Some days, he spends more than 15 hours attending meetings, luncheons and waiting for major speeches on the floor."There is nothing like attending a convention," he says.There is also nothing like the Democratic National Convention for 2020, which begins Monday. It's going all virtual in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak. It starts with a keynote speech from Sen. Bernie Sanders, and will conclude Thursday when Joe Biden officially accepts the presidential nomination. Durfee used to attend with his San Diego counterparts. This year he was supposed to go to the convention in Milwaukee. Instead, he'll be joining from his home office in University Heights. "We would normally be seeing one another, even having breakfast together... We'd grab a couple of tables, and say 'these are San Diego tables, get away,'" he said, jokingly.The same virtual format will apply for the Republican National Convention, happening next week. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, says these conventions are essentially one long political ad. The business of the party is not the priority - it's getting voters excited for November."The big question here is whether America will want to watch something that looks like the Zoom meetings many of us have been in all day," he said. But Kousser said there is intense political interest that could push up viewership. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Christmas morning, more than 700 families drove through a toy and food distribution at the Jacobs Center on Euclid Avenue in San Diego. Families were given boxes of food from the San Diego Food Bank, plus every child was able to get out of their car to receive at least three wrapped gifts. There were also free gift cards available.“My little one smiled. He was so happy,” said Elsa Sarabia, a mom of five who drove through.Sarabia said she works as a chef, and both she and her husband have lost hours at work this year. This event meant more gifts for her children that she might not have otherwise been able to afford.“We don’t have a lot of money to buy stuff for the kids and we appreciate everything you do for us,” she said, thanking the organizers.This is the fourth time this event was held. It’s hosted by Shane Harris and the People’s Alliance for Justice, with support from Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and the San Diego Lifeguards.The event had to adapt this year to be safe due to coronavirus, but Harris said they knew they had to make those changes to continue to fill this need. The breakfast would usually take place in a big hall, but organizers designed a drive-through format for 2020.“Really just trying to make sure the needs of the community are met particularly at a time where COVID-19 has made it really difficult for a lot of families economically,” said Harris.One volunteer was dancing through the whole morning as she distributed food, saying she was glad to give up her Christmas morning if it meant helping those in her community who needed it this year."A lot of these people do appear to be in great need. Surfers are determined to catch 100 waves by the end of the day.They can participate solo or with a team. (KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said.She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets.The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo.
