BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt here Monday. Both agreed to deepen cooperation.     During their talks, Wen said as the first western country to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China 58 years ago, Sweden and China have continued to increase mutual trust and understanding, as well as expand cooperation in all areas.     The recent years, in particular, have seen rapid growth in bilateral trade volume, said Wen, noting that China has become the largest trade partner for Sweden in Asia. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao holds talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, on April 14, 2008Fruitful results have been made in bilateral investment and technological cooperation with vigorous exchanges among the two peoples and sound coordination in international affairs.     Wen said against the backdrop of development of economic globalization, enhancing bilateral cooperation is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and is conducive to promote China-EU strategic partnership.     China is ready to maintain high-level contacts and consultations at all levels, and develop exchanges and cooperation in human rights on the basis of equality and mutual respect.     China will also actively expand cooperation in environment protection and energy saving technology, create conditions to encourage business investment and trade exchange, as well as cement exchanges in culture and social development, said the premier.     In response, Reinfeldt said Sweden attached importance to keeping good dialogue and cooperation with China.     Sweden is opposed to trade protection against China and is willing to further expand bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and protection of intellectual property right.     Reinfeldt also expressed his hope of strengthening exchanges and cooperation with China in energy saving, emission reduction and climate change in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.     After their talks, the two leaders attended a signing ceremony of a series of agreements concerning environment protection, sustainable development and communication.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo also met with Reinfeldt.     Both of them pledged to enhance political dialogue, expand cooperation under the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.     Reinfeldt arrived in Beijing on Sunday, continuing his five-day state visit to China. He has just finished his attendance in the year's annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in China's Sanya, a platform for high-level interaction between leaders from Asia and the world.

He also said that Barbados supported the Beijing Olympic Games and China's participation in the Inter-American Development Bank.

XIANGFEN, Shanxi, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers continued to search for the missing in last Monday's fatal mud-rock flow in north China's Shanxi Province that killed 254 people and injured 34 to date.     No new bodies were found from 6 p.m. on Sunday to 6 p.m. on Monday. Rescuers were continuing to search in areas designated by the family members of the missing, according to Lian Zhendong, the rescue operation's chief.     "We will not stop the rescue work in a short time," he said. "We will do our best to make the family members of the missing see their relatives." Rescue workers work on the ruins at the key spot of the mud-rock flow in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, north China's Shanxi Province, Sept. 15, 2008A rain-triggered mud-rock flow happened around 7:50 a.m. on Sept. 8 when the bank of a pond holding waste ore dregs burst at the Tashan Mine in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, destroying buildings, trade markets and residences lying about 500 meters downstream.     The death toll has risen to 254, 151 of whom have been identified. The 34 injured, four seriously, were being treated in hospital.     An initial investigation showed that factors leading to the accident included the production and building of the pond was in violation of regulations. The mine also lacked a security checkup, failed to implement the orders for straightening up operations, in addition to the loose supervision of concerned safety departments.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, has ordered a nationwide safety check at similar production sites to root out hidden risks following the deadly accident.

  

TIANJIN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday urged local officials and enterprises to seize opportunities and persevere in reform and opening-up to achieve stable and fast economic growth.     Efforts should be made to foster new areas of economic growth so as to reach the goal of long-term steady and fast economic development, Li said during an inspection tour from Aug. 18-19 in Tianjin, a north China port city. BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- As the special guests of Chinese President Hu Jintao, 88 students from the quake-hit areas on Wednesday visited Zhongnanhai, the compound of central authorities, and had a joyous time with grandpa Hu before going to Russia for recuperation.     "I hope all you schoolmates will rest well and recover as soon as possible with the help of Chinese and Russian teachers. I also hope that you will take this rare opportunity to make friends with Russian pals and be the little envoys for our two countries," Hu told the children.     These middle and elementary school students, who come from western China's Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces severely stricken by the May 12 earthquake, represent 1,000 children who are going to Russia for further recovery. We will help arrange your life and study well, and ensure that you grow up as happy and healthy as all the other children."     Hu carefully examined the injuries on some children and expressed the hope that they would, after coming through the calamity, become braver and tougher to overcome any difficulty in their future life.     Hu urged the students to help each other when going out of the country and wished them a wonderful time in Russia.     During the activity, Hu also met with a senior official with the Russian embassy to China and expressed his gratitude for all the help Russia offered since the quake.     "During the disaster, the Russian government and people offered us timely help, and you invited more than 1,000 quake-hit middle and primary school students to go to Russia for recovery. All these show Russian people's love for the Chinese. And it once again proves that we two countries are real good neighbors and friends," said Hu.     The death toll from the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province, southwest China, stood at 69,197 as of Wednesday noon, and a total of 18,238 people were still missing.
