RIYADH, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Saudi Arabia convened Sunday the fourth meeting of their joint committee on economy and trade in the Saudi capital, co-chaired by Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and Saudi Minister of Finance Ibrahim bin Abdel Aziz al-Asaf.     Chen hailed the rapid growth of bilateral economic and trade ties since the third meeting of the joint committee in 2006, noting that bilateral trade have realized two years in advance the goal of 40 billion U.S. dollars by 2010, and Saudi Arabia has been China's biggest trade partner in West Asia for eight consecutive years. He made a five-point proposal, in which he said both countries should strive to expand bilateral trade to reach 60 billion dollars by 2015.     He also proposed to maintain the long-term and steady crude oil trade between the two sides, in addition to enhancing cooperation on exploiting gas, oil projects and petrochemical industry, and establish a cooperation mechanism on trade remedy.     The Chinese minister stressed that both sides should promote the negotiation process on the free trade agreement between China and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). COPENHAGEN, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday urged the rich nations negotiating in the UN-led climate talks in Copenhagen to help seal a deal by delivering on their promises to cut carbon emissions and provide financial support to help developing nations adapt to global warming.The call comes as ministers arrive for the higher segment of the talks that are tasked with achieving goals to avoid irreversible change in climate that scientists warn could be disastrous to the Earth. China's Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said he hoped for a "balanced outcome" of the UN climate change conference.     He was speaking at a press conference hours after a draft text for the Copenhage talks emerged. "The final document we're going to adopt needs to be taking into account the needs and aspirations of all countries," particularly the most vulnerable ones, he said.     Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, developed nations are committed to quantified emission reduction targets and provision of support in financing, technology and capacity building to developing nations. The Chinese minister said climate change is "a matter of survival" for developing nations.     Developing nations are asking the rich nations to up their emissions reduction targets and financial pledges, saying they failed to fulfil their obligations under the convention.     The call for funding was partly answered earlier on Friday with European Union leaders pledging 2.4 billion euros (3.5 billion U.S. dollars) annually from 2010 to 2012 to help developing countries tackle global warming.     Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the 27-nation bloc, said in Brussels that the bloc has made satisfactory contributions to helping the poorest countries combat climate change.     Developing nations still view the pledge as a far cry from their needs.     The issue of financial support is "extremely important" as developing nations are "worst hit" by climate change, he said.     He questioned the "sincerity" of developed nations in their commitment as only short-term funding, such as a three-year target, was being proposed.     The key to the success of the Copenhagen talks is for developed countries to keep their promises, he said.     "I would urge all leaders from developed countries to keep their promises, to have the future of humanity in their minds, especially the large population out there in the developing world," he said.     He also said China has "a responsible and pragmatic vision" for tackling climate change and will do its share in the global combat against climate change.     China last month announced it would reduce the intensity of carbon emissions per unit of its GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent against 2005 levels.     Responding to rich nations' concern over transparency of China's voluntary action, he said plans for action would go through China's own legal process and there would be a regime of monitoring, verification and statistical supervision domestically to ensure transparency.     "We're also willing to increase transparency by announcing the results of our action in reports coming out of China," he said.

BEIJING Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- United States President Barack Obama Tuesday said the U.S. government recognizes that Tibet is part of the People's Republic of China.     He also said that the United States supports the early resumption of dialogue between the Chinese government and representatives of the ** Lama to resolve any concerns and differences that the two sides may have.     "The United States respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China," Obama said at a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao at Beijing's Great Hall of the People.   

TAIPEI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Kuomintang (KMT) Party won 12 county and city chief seats in Taiwan's local elections Saturday, while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) landed four seats, voting results showed.     The KMT won 289 county and city lawmaker seats whereas the DPP won 128. Candidates with no party affiliations and those who did not run in the election through political parties won 170 seats.     The KMT also won a majority of 121 seats in the election of township chiefs, as opposed to the DPP's 34 seats.     The voting, also known as "three-in-one elections," lasted from8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- The weight of private enterprises in the overall economy is on the rise and that of State-owned enterprises (SOEs) on the decline, Ma Jiantang, minister of the National Bureau of Statistics, said on Friday.     The number of private firms rose by 81.4 percent from 2004 to 2008 to reach 3.6 million and SOEs dropped by 20 percent to 143,000, Ma said at a press conference where China's second economic census results were released.     China has made great efforts over the past 30 years to restructure its economy. It has gradually raised the proportion of private enterprises after the market-oriented reform began in the early 1980s. As a result, the private sector has contributed an ever-growing value to the country's GDP and provided most of the jobs.     But in recent years, some major acquisitions have seen SOEs buying into private companies, sparking concern that the State may be strengthening its control over the private sector.     Ma said the census figures do not suggest SOEs are buying into private enterprises.     In terms of asset value, SOEs saw their proportion in the nation's total drop by 8.1 percentage points from 2004 to 2008 to 23 percent. In contrast, private enterprises' assets rose by 3.3 percentage points to 12.3 percent.
