SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jonathan Goldwasser was one of the first business owners to set up shop inside One Paseo in Del Mar Heights.He opened the Parakeet Cafe when One Paseo’s retail area launched in March 2019 - and followed that up a few months later with Juice Crafters.He says business is of course best when the plaza is full.However, One Paseo has been anything but full since March, when coronavirus restrictions went into effect.“This has been hard,” Goldwasser said. “We went from maybe 20 employees to four.”Things, however, changed this week, when One Paseo fully reopened its retail center. On Thursday, there were people sitting at its socially distant tables and chairs, while shoppers in masks walked down its courtyard.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said, noting he’s back up to about 20 workers.About 25% of the center’s 40-plus businesses are mom-and-pops that rely on foot traffic.Juice Crafters closed entirely and Parakeet Cafe was reduced to takeout and delivery, sales going down 80%. They’ve since recovered and are now off 40% from pre-coronavirus levels.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said.The City Council approved One Paseo, a residential, retail and office complex in 2015. However, a referendum from nearby residents and the mall across the street ensued. Developer Kilroy scaled back the center to its current 0 million version, which opened last year just south of Del Mar Heights Road.Now that it’s open, there are social distancing rules in place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than two weeks before Halloween, people across the county are getting creative and building candy chutes in hopes of a safer version of door-to-door trick-or-treating.In the yard of the Witthoft home in Lakeside, a large display stands in testament to a four-decade old family tradition of Halloween fright."We love Halloween. It's a fun holiday, a scary holiday. Seeing people dressed up. It's a lot of fun," said Chris Witthoft.Witthoft says part of that fun is handing out candy. That tradition, like so many things this year, is wrapped in uncertainty because of the pandemic."We've done it for so long. Just don't want to let the kids down," said Witthoft.So Witthoft and her family decided to build their own solution: two candy chutes created from PVC pipes and then painted. Witthoft and other family members will push the candy down the chute, staying six feet from the kids."All of us will have gloves and masks on, with social distancing circles along our fence," said Witthoft.Witthoft says the line to get to the candy will be socially distanced, while the chute and nearby areas will be constantly wiped down.To the west, in Rolando Village, Amberosia Vivar has designs on her own candy slide."Will make it out of PVC pipe ... It brings a little excitement for families stuck inside for months. I know my kids have been looking forward to Halloween for months," said Vivar.Across social media, ABC 10news has seen countless examples of San Diegans creating similar candy chutes, but is it safe? County guidelines recommend against any door-to-door trick-or-treating, a chief concern is kids congregating to get the candy. That 'congregating' is also a potential issue with the candy chutes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lego fans will have more to look forward to in 2019, as Legoland California plans new attractions in celebration of its 20th birthday.Among one of the park's 2019 offerings: Free admission for kids 12 and under on their birthday, starting in January."Having a chance to reflect on the last 20 years ahead of next year’s birthday celebration, it’s incredible to think about all we’ve accomplished during that time and the amount of kids we positively impacted through their experiences at the Resort," said park General Manager Peter Ronchetti.RELATED: Southern California theme parks ring in the holiday seasonAmong the new additions for 2019, Legoland said it plans to add new attractions and live shows for visitors to experience.One new addition will be a new attraction inspired by "The Lego Movie." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a nervewracking place: on stage, behind the mic, looking out at a sea of people waiting for your punch line.The Comedy Palace in Kearny Mesa sees many comedians but not like the one who performed Friday night."It was something I thought about even in college but lacked the courage to do it," said Michael Schmid. "I always loved to make people laugh."Schmid always had the passion, but it was a recent visit to the doctor that gave him the courage he had been lacking."If not now, when," Schmid said.Three years ago, he was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis, a condition similar to ALS."It had spread to my upper body and becoming more quadriplegic," Schmid said.One month ago, he made the toughest decision of his life."The most difficult thing I ever had to do in my life was to talk to my children about ending my life."Schmid says he will end his life on December 27, citing severe pain. He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,'" said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night. Many of the professional comedians were in the audience as Schmid performed in his wheelchair with Alvarado holding his microphone.After the performance, Schmid's father made his way to the stage to give his son a hug."I never expected him to do that and show the world we're close," said Schmid.Schmid's ex-wife and his four children were also in the audience."No matter how crappy of a hand he's been dealt, he's taken it with a joke," said Schmid's son Joshua.Schmid is grateful he had a chance to laugh."I want my friends and family to have at least that memory when I'm gone," Schmid said.
