SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The chief executive of a California technology company has resigned after the release of a video showing him using vulgar and racist language toward an Asian family at a restaurant. KPIX-TV reports Solid8 CEO Michael Lofthouse resigned from the San Francisco Bay Area tech startup Saturday. Lofthouse issued a statement announcing his departure from Solid8 in which he apologizes and says he plans to enroll in an anti-racist program. Jordan Chan posted a video online showing Lofthouse cursing and gesturing with his middle finger at her family as they celebrated her aunt’s birthday in Carmel Valley July 4.RELATED: Northern California restaurant removes man after racist tirade against Asian familyLofthouse was reportedly seen on video directing racist and vulgar language at an Asian family, yelling, "Trump is going f*ck you. You f*cking Asian piece of sh*t."In a statement issued to media following the video, Lofthouse admits making the comments and says he will be reflecting on his behavior.“My behavior in the video is appalling,” the statement read. “This was clearly a moment where I lost control and made incredibly hurtful and divisive comments. I would like to deeply apologize to the Chan family. I can only imagine the stress and pain they feel. I was taught to respect people of all race and I will take the time to reflect on my actions and work to better understand the inequality that so many of those around me face every day.” 1479

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating Monday night's shoot out at the border at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Christopher Barajas said he was pulling up to the line to head into the U.S, but turned back. "Everyone started screaming before I even get to the line," said Barajas. It happened around 7:30 p.m. when police and Customs and Border Protection officers say the driver of a white pick up truck refused to stop at a secondary inspection area. Instead, the twenty-three-year-old allegedly accelerated and tried to drive straight through the port into the United States before being blocked by a vehicle. Police say the driver started firing shots from inside his truck and then got out and continued shooting at officers. Seven C-B-P officers returned fire, hitting the man at least once. Officers and San Diego Fire Rescue crews performed life saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene."If they didn't find any individuals in there, smuggling, he was probably hiding something in there," said Barajas.White plastic garbage bags could be seen sitting on the truck's tailgate, but police haven't released any information about what, if anything, was found. Tuesday, only the Sentri and Ready lanes remained open on the northbound side. Traffic heading into Mexico was not affected. Police were expected to release the identity of the man killed once his family was notified. 1429

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco supervisors are set to approve new legislation to discourage racist 911 calls that they say expose people of color to dangerous run-ins with police.Supporters say people need to think twice before calling 911 on someone who is barbecuing, jogging or stenciling "Black Lives Matter" at a home. The legislation is called the Caution Against Racial and Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act, also known as the CAREN legislation. The name is a nod to a widespread meme using the name "Karen" to describe a specific type of middle-aged white woman who exhibits behaviors that stem from privilege. Some say they support the legislation, but the name is sexist. 691

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle's police chief says she will retire. The move was reported Monday, the same day the City Council approved reducing the department through layoffs and attrition. The cuts were supported by demonstrators who have marched in the city following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The reductions were strongly opposed by the mayor and police chief. KING-TV reported that Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best, the city's first Black police chief, told the department of her decision in a letter, saying her retirement will be effective Sept. 2. “I am confident the department will make it through these difficult times,” Best said in the letter. “You truly are the best police department in the country, and please trust me when I say, the vast majority of people in Seattle support you and appreciate you. ... I look forward to seeing how this department moves forward through the process of re-envisioning public safety. I relish the work that will be done by all of you.”Budget measures approved Monday would cut less than million of the department’s 0 million annual budget this year. 1131
