Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that two members of Pence’s Secret Service travel team tested positive. The Secret Service has not confirmed the reports.Pence had planned an event in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday. Instead, Pence made a brief visit to Phoenix on Wednesday to meet with public health officials.CNN reported that the eight members of Pence’s team remained holed up in Arizona as of Friday evening, citing two sources. The reports come as both Pence and President Donald Trump have ramped up their public schedules, holding rallies and public events. The events come after both Pence and Trump largely remained in the Washington, D.C.., area during the spring as the coronavirus began to spread in earnest nationally. As Friday’s reports surfaced, Trump, along with the usual large contingent of Secret Service employees, traveled to Mount Rushmore for a firework display. 1164
College students are stepping up to help working moms during the pandemic with a virtual tutoring service called Project Matriarchs. Two students on a gap year came up with the idea. After talking with parents about balancing work and remote learning for their kids, they found moms were shouldering most of the responsibilities. Some were resorting to dropping out of the workforce.“It was just this reoccurring conversation we'd have where people felt so overwhelmed and so alone and we were like OK we just, we need to do something, not only for these women who are experiencing this right now, but also for ourselves in our peer group who are going to be inheriting these norms very soon,” said Lola McAllister, co-founder of Project Matriarchs. Here's how it works. Forms to sign up are online. College students will be vetted to become tutors. Then, the site will match them with kids based on availability and what subject they need help with. The tutors can either volunteer or make an hour, but most parents don't pay anything at all.Project Matriarchs relies on donations to keep the service available for families who need it most.“So many of these kids in different school systems especially are getting left behind, not on purpose or not because the teacher can help it, but just kind of having the one-on-one support that isn't a cost burden that is accessible to everyone I think has just proven to be really important,” said Pilar McDonald, co-founder of Project Matriarchs. The founders are now in talks with employers about offering their service. 1574
CINCINNATI, Ohio — An Ohio man who falsely claimed in 2019 to be a long-missing boy received a mandatory two-year federal prison sentence on Tuesday after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft.U.S. District Court Judge Michael Barrett gave Brian Rini, 25, credit for time served in jail, where Rini has been detained for nearly 21 months. That means Rini will be released from prison in about three and a half months. In April 2019, Rini told federal agents he was Timmothy Pitzen, an Aurora, Illinois, boy who disappeared at age 6 in 2011.Rini claimed he was also a sex trafficking victim who escaped from his captors. His lies prompted a massive federal, state and local investigation and raised the hopes of the Pitzen family, only to see them crushed again when the FBI soon exposed Rini's lie."I just want to say I'm sorry for what I've done and that I wish that I could just take it back," Rini said during a video hearing in Cincinnati. "I'm sorry for the family."Rini has twice before made bogus claims about being a juvenile sex trafficking victim and only admitted to the hoax this time after being confronted with the results of a DNA test, according to the FBI."He can't keep doing this. This is no way to live his own life and he really needs to think of the people that he hurts when he does this," said Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Healey, who prosecuted the case.Healey said Rini's lies prompted a major criminal investigation that pulled important law enforcement resources away from other cases, and caused "an enormous amount of unnecessary pain to the victim's family.""He needs to understand that when he tells lies like this it does cause damage. It hurts people," Healey said.Rini will be under court supervision for a year after his release from prison. He said he expects to return to northern Ohio and live with his father. This story was originally published by Craig Cheatham at WCPO. 1932

CODY, Wyo. – During an interview with Forbes, Kanye West elaborated on his decision to run for president of the United States and made several more head scratching comments.Over the course of four “rambling” hours of interviews, the magazine says the rapper confirmed that he was serious when he tweeted Saturday that he would pursue the White House.West disclosed that he would be running under a new political party, the “Birthday Party.” He reportedly said, “because when we win, it’s everybody’s birthday.” He said his campaign slogan is “YES!” and he’s already chosen his running mate – an obscure Wyoming preacher named Michelle Tidball. In the past, West has voiced his support of President Donald Trump, who has been seeking reelection since he took office in 2017. However, West told Forbes that he no longer supports Trump and that he was “taking the red hat off” with the interview. With West apparently entering the presidential race, many Democrats are concerned he could spoil former Vice President Joe Biden’s prospects of winning. West is OK with that and isn’t shy about it, calling Biden “not special,” like him, former President Barack Obama and Trump.West went on to say that it’s “a form of racism and white supremacy and white control to say that all Black people need to be Democrat and to assume that me running is me splitting the vote.”Another revelation – West told the magazine that he was sick with COVID-19 in February. He described having chills, shaking in bed and looking up videos to see what he was supposed to do to get over it.Also regarding COVID-19, West said he’s “extremely cautious” about the potential coronavirus vaccine and he went as far as calling it “the mark of the beast.”“They want to put chips inside of us, they want to do all kinds of things, to make it where we can’t cross the gates of heaven,” West told Forbes. “I'm sorry when I say they, the humans that have the Devil inside them. And the sad thing is that, the saddest thing is that we all won’t make it to heaven, that there’ll be some of us that do not make it. Next question.”West also discusses Planned Parenthood and said he believes the clinics “have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work.”West initially said he would be running for president in 2024, but has decided to make his move early. Entering the 2020 race this late will prove to be challenging though, especially because he has no campaign apparatus and has already missed the filing deadline for several states, like Indiana, New York and Texas. It’s unclear if he’s planned to have his name appear on ballots or campaign for write-in votes. 2659
