The US House of Representatives will vote on whether to legalize marijuana across the country in September. This would be the first time a chamber of Congress has ever voted on removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act.Cannabis was included as what is called a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. Schedule I drugs are defined as having a high potential for abuse and no medical benefit. Other Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, ecstasy and peyote. On Friday, representatives were informed the MORE Act will come up for a vote in the September work period of the House. The MORE Act - Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act - will expunge some cannabis records and create grant opportunities for people who have been negatively impacted by the criminalization of marijuana in addition to removing it from its Schedule I classification, according to Politico.Marijuana is already legal in 11 states, despite the federal designation as a Schedule I drug.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is opposed to the act, and some say the odds of it passing the senate are very slim.Even if the MORE Act passes both chambers of Congress, it would not make sales of marijuana legal. Regulation of marijuana would be left to states to decide how to handle it. 1310
The search for missing actress Naya Rivera at a California lake has moved from a rescue effort to a recovery effort, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said Thursday. In a press release, the VCSO said that investigators believe that Rivera "drowned in what appears to be a tragic accident."The VCSO added that recovery efforts had been hampered because divers are experiencing low visibility in waters.Rivera was last seen on Wednesday at Lake Piru, which is located about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles. According to Cpt. Eric Buschow of the VCSO, deputies were called to the lake when Rivera's 4-year-old son was found floating adrift in the boat. The child reportedly told deputies that he had been swimming with his mother, but she never returned to the boat.Rivera is best known for portraying Santana on Glee, which ran on Fox between 2009 and 2015. 865
The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Monday to put on hold a federal appeals court ruling from last week that narrowed the scope of the travel ban as it applies to a certain class of refugees. In a brief filed with the Supreme Court, Justice Department lawyers said that a three-judge panel from the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals was wrong to exempt those refugees who have a contractual commitment from resettlement organizations. In a one-sentence order issued Monday afternoon, Justice Anthony Kennedy -- who has jurisdiction over the 9th circuit -- granted the government a temporary stay until Tuesday in order to give the challengers time to respond to the government's petition. The travel ban bars people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the US.Last week, the lower court narrowed the scope of the travel ban for extended family members such as grandparents and refugees. In his filing, acting Solicitor General Jeff Wall said DOJ was only asking for a stay for the lower court ruling as it applies to the refugees. Wall said the administration has already been allowing in close family members, but allowing in the refugees would "upend the status quo and do far greater harm to the national interest."The issue of the scope of the ban has been playing out in the lower courts, but the Supreme Court is set to hear the larger issues concerning the merits of the case on October 11. 1442
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its guidance on face coverings on Tuesday, adding information about wearing expired surgical masks.According to the FDA, face and surgical masks may still offer protection even if they've passed their designated shelf life or expiration date."If there is no date available on the face mask label or packaging, facilities should contact the manufacturer. The user should inspect all masks before use and, if there are concerns such as degraded materials (such as elastic) or visible tears," the agency recommends that you should discard the product. However, when it comes to re-using surgical disposal masks, the CDC recommends discarding them after one use.You can clean reusable masks, the CDC says, and recommends washing them after each use. For N95s, which the CDC considers a one-time-use product, but can be re-worn if cleaned with an approved decontamination method. 927
The U.S. Geological Survey is monitoring the recent eruption of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii and has made photos and videos of it available to the public.Small cracks began appearing on May 1 following a powerful earthquake, and Kilauea erupted May 4, sending lava onto surrounding roadways. The USGC said on Sunday night, May 6, the volcano's summit lava lake had dropped significantly, and was roughly 220 meters below the crater rim.An overnight video from the main affected neighborhood, Leilani Estates, shows lava erupting from a fissure and advancing north. The lava flow continued to advance several hours after the fissure eruption diminished, the USGS said.In another video (attached to this article), a lava flow can be seen moving on Makamae Street in the Leilani Estates around 9:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, May 6.By Sunday night, at least 10 fissures had opened, and 26 homes had been destroyed, CNN reports. The active venting of lava and hazardous fumes was ongoing. As of Monday morning, the USGS still had a current volcano alert level of "warning" in effect, and the code color is orange."Residents should remain informed and heed Hawaii County Civil Defense closures, warnings, and messages," the USGS website states. Alerts may be found here.Kilauea last erupted in 1983. 1327
