SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman was sentenced in a federal courtroom Wednesday for stealing mail from nearly 120 San Diegans and cashing stolen checks at banks.Marie Crystal Mays, 33, was sentenced to four years in prison for conspiring to steal mail from residents, including in the Rancho Pe?asquitos area, and defrauding banks in order to cash the stolen checks, according to the Office of the United States Attorney Southern District of California.Prosecutors say the investigation identified at least 119 victims.Mays pleaded guilty in August 2019 to conspiracy, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, possession of stolen mail, and possession with intent to unlawfully use five or more identification documents.As part of her scheme, she stole credit cards, checks, and money orders from mailboxes, authorities say. She then created a bank account in a victim's name, deposited stolen checks, and withdrew money for herself.A judge also ordered Mays to pay ,950.66 in restitution to four banks and credit unions.“The people of San Diego deserve the peace of mind of knowing that when they send or receive mail, thieves won’t steal it from their mailboxes and scavenge for credit cards, checks and personally identifiable information,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “The defendant’s conduct showed a callous and selfish disregard for scores of citizens’ privacy.” 1377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Alpine residents are bracing for a Public Safety Power Shutoff, as SDG&E monitors the weather conditions.The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning Thursday, "winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Local gusts to 75 mph possible near the mountain ridge tops." The warning lasts through Friday afternoon.Neighbors in Alpine are always ready if a fire sparks, “we keep a go bag of important documents and stuff and uh three dogs at this point and we’d be able to take them with us, and we had to do that in the past too." Neighbor Steve Allison said. He's lived in Alpine for 20 years."Well we’ve chosen to evacuate four times, the last time we had no choice, we had to go. The fire burned within 40 feet of the house," he said he was thankful firefighters saved his home last year during the West Fire.Since the West Fire swept through, in July of 2018, he's made some changes to his home, "we have defensible space around our house, we have new vents in our attic they’re supposed to keep the embers out of the attic."SDG&E reports areas of Alpine, Descanso and Pine Valley are in the dark Thursday and won't get power back until Saturday evening at 6 p.m, due to the Public Safety Power Shutoff. Neighbors like Allison are determined fire danger won't scare them off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stolen Mustang was found abandoned and on fire in Paradise Hills.It happened just before 4 a.m. Monday on Valley Road along State Route 54.The car fire spread to the nearby brush, which made its way up the hillside towards the SR-54.Fire crews had the blaze knocked down in about 15 minutes. No structures were threatened. Investigators believe the car may have been intentionally set on fire. 423

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A water culvert in Logan Heights overflowed Thursday night due to heavy rain, leaving neighbors with a mess Friday, many homes destroyed from all the water.Ruben Cortez’s home got filled with about a foot of water. Initially the water just piled up outside his sliding glass door, “the water was up to here so it looked like I was inside an aquarium”. After 20 minutes water came through the front and back doors, soon filling the entire house.Cortez and his wife are remodeling their home. One week ago they installed new flooring in their bedroom. After the flooding, the floor is completely ruined.The rest of the house has tile flooring and dirt and mud everywhere.His neighbors are also dealing with similar issues. Many parked their cars on the street and during the flooding the water filled up to the steering wheel.Most people in the neighborhood, along with Cortez himself, don’t have flooding insurance. He tells 10News, “its like getting snow insurance you don’t think anything like that is going to happen and this flood wasn’t really a typical flood, it was part of the drain that came out and flooded. You don’t think of those things”. Cortez wasn’t only worried about his own home, he’s also the pastor at the church next door. While the church was okay, the children’s classroom had water damage. The water also filled between a foot to two feet in the rooms.Left with a laundry list of things to fix, remodel and clean, Cortez tells 10News, “just count your blessings and the bad things as they come in, just face them one at a time." 1581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second lawsuit has been filed by family members of a mother and daughter killed by a YouTube star in a deadly wrong-way crash last year.18-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet on YouTube, drove his McLaren the wrong way on I-805 in August 2018. The crash killed Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. This latest lawsuit was filed August 22nd by Angelo Pizarro and Arcelio Garcia. Pizarro is one of the sons of Aileen Pizarro. Garcia is the father of Aryana. A lawsuit earlier this summer was filed by Aileen Pizarro's other son, Dominic, and her father. The lawsuit claims wrongful death and negligence by the City of San Diego and the County of San Diego. The family is also suing Heitmann’s estate. It states that San Diego police received a “mental case” call that Heitmann was “screaming, paranoid and delusional and threatening to harm his mom.”Police were advised by a licensed psychiatrist that Heitmann needed to be “possibly placed on a 5150 mental hold,” according to court records. However, officers did not speak to or evaluate Heitmann to determine if he was a danger to himself or others. The lawsuit also states that “one or more of the Police Officers represented or implied that they were part of a San Diego County Psychiatric Emergency Team.”Team 10 reached out to both county and city officials. As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no comment regarding the lawsuit from the city. A county spokesperson said they have not seen the lawsuit yet. Cynthia Chihak, the attorney for Pizarro and Garcia, sent Team 10 a statement which reads in part:"I am privileged to represent Angelo Pizarro, the son of Aileen Pizarro, and Arcelio Garcia, the father and sole heir of twelve year old Aryana Pizarro, who were killed on August 23, 2018 when their car was struck head-on by a McLaren automobile driven by Trevor Heitmann... This family is not excusing Mr. Heitmann’ s reckless behavior, but believe this tragic loss of three lives could have been prevented if the City of San Diego has taken seriously earlier reports of his violent and dangerous behavior. The loss suffered by this young man Angelo, of his mother and sister and the loss to Mr. Garcia of his daughter can never be rectified.
