ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Saturday, kicking off his three-day official visit to Greece.The Greece visit, the first stop of Wen's four-nation Europe tour, is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.During his stay, Premier Wen is due to meet Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Parliament Speaker Philippos Petsalnikos and hold talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou before witnessing the signing of a series of deals. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. Greece's sovereign debt crisis triggered fears of a domino effect across the eurozone earlier this year."We have noticed that the Greek government has adopted measures which have been effective. BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Thursday stressed the importance of nurturing cadres from ethnic minority groups to help in the government's drive to develop regions inhabited by ethnic minorities.Efforts should be made to cultivate outstanding cadres with political integrity and professional competence from ethnic minorities, Xi said at a symposium marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of a training course for Tibetan cadres at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).The Party School of the CPC Central Committee initiated a training course for Tibetan cadres in Sept. 1980. Over the past three decades, more than 1,700 Tibetans have attended 42 sessions of the training course, becoming the backbone in promoting development, stability and ethnic unity in Tibet.Xi said Party schools should play a key role in training and nurturing cadres from ethnic minorities, who possess both political integrity and ability, particularly among young people and those who are from grass-roots levels.

XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade surplus was approximately 84 billion U.S. dollars from Jan. to July, down 20 percent year on year, and the year 2010 is expected to see a small trade surplus, said Commerce Minister Chen Deming on Tuesday.Chen made the projection at the ongoing World Investment Forum that runs from Sept. 7 to 9 in southeast China's coastal city of Xiamen.China has seen a trade surplus in recent years, but with a decreasing margin, and the trade surplus takes up a very small proportion of the GDP, noted Chen."China's foreign trade policy aims to stabilize exports and increase imports, which can boost China's economy and also bring positive impacts to neighboring countries," said Chen.Customs statistics show that China's import and export value in the first seven months reached 1,617 billion U.S. dollars, with exports worth 850.5 billion U.S. dollars, up 35.6 percent, and imports at 766.6 billion U.S. dollars, up by 47.2 percent.China's trade surplus in 2009 was more than 190 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.4 percent from the 290 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.The World Investment Forum is the global meeting on investment and development issues organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Held every two years, the forum aims to strengthen international cooperation in the interest of promoting international investment and its contribution to economic growth and development.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 8 (Xinhua)-- The tenth tropical storm this year might strike southeast China Thursday night or Friday, bringing waves as high as six meters, said local flood control officials Wednesday.The storm could make landfall in the coastal areas between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian Provinces, said Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement.The storm was tracked at 21 degrees north latitude and 119.4 degrees east longitude in the South China Sea at 6 p.m. For the next 12 hours, it is expected to move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour, said the statement.Further, the storm was packing wind gusts of 72 kilometers per hour near its center at 6 p.m. Torrential rains of 30 to 80 mm are expected in central and eastern Guangdong if landfall is made.Headquarters officials have asked fishing boats to stay clear of the waters east of the Pearl River estuary. Checks on reservoirs should also be beefed up, they said.
