But the village officials told me: so long as you are still alive, you will have your home again," said Yu Shutao from Liansankeng Village."I will bring my family to go to my elder brother's home in the town. As soon as the floods recede, I will come home to attend my cropland," he said.Thirty-two-year-old villager Sun Lianhua sat in a mini-bus with her dog."The dog is like a member of my family. I will bring it everywhere I go," she said.

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health reported 1,397 deaths from infectious diseases on the mainland in July.Some 750,000 infections were registered last month, including 10 cholera infections, according to a statement released Tuesday by the ministry.No plague cases or deaths from cholera were reported in July, the statement said.Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A infectious diseases -- the most serious class under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.More than 350,000 cases of Class B diseases were also reported in the month, with 1,251 of them resulting in death.Tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, dysentery, syphilis and gonorrhea were among the five most frequently reported cases in the month, accounting for 94 percent of all Class B cases, the statement said.The death toll due to Class C disease was 146. The top three Class C diseases were hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), infectious diarrhea and mumps, which accounted for over 98 percent of cases in this category, the statement said.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. XI'AN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have left at least 15 people dead and 54 missing in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, flood control authorities said late Monday.The lives of more than 1.33 million people were disrupted by the heavy flooding in 23 counties and cities in the southern regions of the province, said officials in the provincial flood control headquarters.Torrential rains have cut off roads, flattened homes, destroyed power facilities and flooded farmland in the worst-hit Ankang City, causing economic losses estimated at 881 million yuan (129 million U.S. dollars), said officials.In the mountainous county of Langao in Ankang, three people were reported dead and 17 still missing after landslides and mud-rock flows struck several villages late Sunday.Continuous rainfall has battered many Chinese provinces and regions over the past week.In neighboring Sichuan Province, flash floods and landslides left at least 26 people dead and more than 30 missing.China is also preparing for the worst Yangtze flooding in more than a decade as water levels in the upper and middle sections of China' s longest waterway continue rising.
