SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released details Wednesday about the development of an officer-involved shooting that killed a man in El Cerrito. The aunt of 52-year-old Dennis Carolino called 911 the night of Aug. 24 to report he hit her in the head with a brick. The 70-year-old woman told police Carolino had psychiatric issues, officers said. She also told police Carolino had previous contact with them and had never been combative. Police requested the assistance of the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) and responded to the home in the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue, where officers encountered Carolino in the backyard. “As the officers entered the backyard area to determine the location of the man, he quickly emerged from an outbuilding, holding a shovel. The officers gave the man verbal commands to drop the shovel. One of the officers drew his Taser at that point. The man did not cooperate with the officers’ commands and began to rapidly advance on the officers as he swung the shovel. One officer fired the Taser, which did not have any effect on him. The man continued to advance, prompting the other officer to fire his service weapon,” San Diego Police said in a statement. Police provided aid to Carolino until paramedics arrived. He did not survive. Officer Jose Mendez, a 16-year veteran of the department, fired his Taser, SDPD said. The officer who fired his service weapon was identified as Officer Brad Keyes, a four-year veteran of the department. Body camera footage of the incident will be released within 45 days of the incident under Assembly Bill 748, said police. Officers noted that PERT clinicians ride with police officers to provide additional resources for people with mental issues, however they do not have contact with those involved until the situation has been stabilized. These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173
