CARMEL VALLEY (KGTV) - Schools are urging parents to learn more about the hit Netflix show '13 Reasons Why' so they can have a conversation with their kids.The first season of the show came out in March of 2017, and immediately after searches on Google relating to suicide skyrocketed.Particularly, "how to commit suicide" up?26%, "suicide prevention" rose 23% and "suicide hotline number" was up 21% according to a research paper published in JAMA International Medicine and CNN.At Carmel Valley Middle School, they faced that very serious issue personally. Three 7th graders, Madison, Lauren and Ximena saw their friend, who moved to LA, posting her pain on social media. She was cutting."She was posting a lot of videos on social media holding up an exact-o-knife and talking about all this," Madison said."I found out first and texted both of them and said we have to do something about it," Ximena said it was on her Snapchat story.Madison said they were taught in P.E. that this kind of act is a plea for help. They went to their counselor, Karen Infantino who went the extra step, reaching out to a counselor at the friend's new school, ensuring she got the help she needed."And was able to reach out and make sure that she was in a good place but it’s also really important for me to make sure that any student that comes to me feels listened to and acknowledged," Infantino said.The sentiment of being heard could've changed the entire plot of '13 Reasons Why.'The main character of the dramatic series reveals the reasons she committed suicide. A topic school principal Cara Dolnik doesn't take lightly."Subjects of the show are sexual assault and there’s a part about rape and bullying and suicide, it’s very heavy so it’s really important that they do watch this if their kids are interested in it it actually is an avenue for them to have these conversations," she said.The series rolls out May 18th, and Carmel Valley Middle proactively sent out a letter to educate parents."Parents should have conversations with their kids about everything and that’s not always easy so you have to find a way in to have that conversation," she said.A conversation these three girls already had with their parents, "It’s just really scary because nothing like that has ever happened before," Lauren said.All of them thankful and relieved they could help their friend, and hopeful to help others by sharing their message.If you or someone you know has had suicidal thoughts, please contact the crisis line at 888-724-7240. 2573

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It all started with a high school assignment.Megan O’Grady says she had to write about a topic that she felt passionate about in her life.As the daughter of a law enforcement officer who had recently learned of the deaths of five officers during a 2016 protest in Dallas, it wasn’t hard for her to share what she was feeling at the time.That paper would soon turn into a passion project and the nonprofit, Blue Line Bears.Four years later, the group has dispersed more than 700 teddy bears - sewn with the uniforms of fallen law enforcement officers and given to loved ones that have been left behind.“Taking that uniform shirt and making it into something that can be held and cuddled...it gives them comfort and a little bit of their loved one back,” the 18-year-old tells FOX 4.She says prior to this year, Blue Line Bears filled five to ten requests per week from agencies across the country.“Now, it can be up to like 20 or 30”.Megan’s father is Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady with the Cape Coral Police Department.He says agencies from all over reach out to the group for bears.O’Grady says they also use the website Officer Down Memorial Page to keep track of impacted families.According to the site, there was 148 line of duty deaths in 2019.This year and at the time of this story, the website reports that the number is already 247.The site says most of those deaths are related to COVID-19 and gunfire.“At any time, we can have over 100 shirts waiting to be turned into bears,” O’Grady says.With an increase in demand comes the need for an increase in space.That’s why the nonprofit is now expanding to an official location in Cape Coral.Megan says the new space will serve as a place to hold meetings and a go-to location for the community to purchases merchandise.She says she's most excited that it will also provide a bigger workspace to prepare the keepsakes that bring support to many families.Because as Megan, now in her first year of college, says, “There’s always a lot of bears to be made.”The O'Gradys say the new location will be complete by the end of the year.The address for the new storefront is 3032 Santa Barbara Boulevard.Click here for more information about Blue Line Bears.This story was first reported by Shari Armstrong at WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. 2315

(KGTV) — NASA announced partnerships Tuesday, including one with Carlsbad business Vulcan Wireless, to advance Moon and Mars technology.Thirteen U.S. companies will work with NASA to fast-track "space technologies and help maintain American leadership in space." You may know the name Vulcan Wireless because their transceivers about the size of your hand are helping NASA map the universe. "Of course we're the communication link so the images that come in they get transmitted through our radio waves," Kevin Lynaugh, Founder of Vulcan Wireless, said.ASTERIA launched in 2017, "ASTERIA (Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics) is a technology demonstration and opportunistic science mission to conduct astrophysical measurements using a CubeSat." Basically the telescope uses light to map stars and planets.That was their biggest project to date. Now NASA hopes their partnership will help increase connectivity for deeper space missions."When you have a spacecraft floating out there, if you don't have a data link it's a brick right? So we provide the communications," Lynaugh explained it's similar to how your Wifi modem works at home.In Vulcan Wireless's Lab, you'll find the same technology NASA uses."When we close this thing down and we lock it we're able to pump all the air out of it so we can simulate space environment with this," Lynaugh said. They have a machine that simulates heat, extreme vibrations, a vacuum among other equipment.All this to ensure their equipment is prepared for space. The transceiver is equipped with rechargeable batteries, fueled by solar panels, and compact, making it ideal for NASA, military and commercial projects. Lynaugh launched Vulcan Wireless in 1993. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (CNS) -- Three wildfires continued burning across open terrain on the grounds of Camp Pendleton Wednesday, sending plumes of smoke over northern San Diego County but posing no threats to military or civilian structures.The flames began spreading through training areas toward the center of the Marine Corps base on Monday.As of Wednesday afternoon, base officials said one of the fires, dubbed the Wood Fire, has burned 7,000 acres and is 20 percent contained.A second fire, called the India Fire, has burned 1,100 acres and is 20 percent contained.A third fire named the Range Fire is burning in the Range 706 Yankee impact area and has charred 500 acres, according to base officials.Base officials said the fires are expected to produce smoke through the remainder of the day, and the fires are not posing a threat on or off the base.Military firefighters have been aided by Cal Fire ground and airborne crews in their effort to corral the blazes.Officials have disclosed no cause for the fires. (KGTV) – It opened with much fanfare back in September, but after a two week period of cancellations February, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet was still dealing with setbacks in early March.“I can’t say that it didn’t [suffer],” said Cal Jet’s President, George Wozniak of their reputation.On Friday, he stood on the tarmac at McClellan-Palomar Airport, personally apologizing to travelers boarding a plane at 4:15 p.m. that had been originally scheduled to leave at 9 a.m.Wozniak said the passengers had been notified of the delay earlier in the day. The plane had experienced mechanical problems the night before and had to fly to Arizona last night for repairs.The delays come after the airline canceled nearly two weeks of flights, beginning just before President’s Day weekend.Wozniak said the plane they use, which is owned by Elite Air, had also been booked by NCAA basketball teams. “It was either a crew or aircraft scheduling problem, where if they had one pilot get ill and not show up, it could throw the whole thing off,” described Wozniak.They could theoretically still use it, but rather than risk more abrupt cancellations, he decided to clear the schedule until they could get the plane back full time.“It was not an easy decision to make,” said Wozniak.Cal Jet’s Yelp page says why.
