Get ready for sticker shock at the gas station if you're one of the estimated 36 million Americans hitting the roads this Memorial Day weekend.Gone are the days of -a-gallon gasoline. A spike in crude oil prices has lifted the national average price of gas by 31 percent over the past year to an average of .97 a gallon, according to AAA.Prices at the pump haven't been this high heading into the biggest driving holiday of the year since 2014, when crude was sitting in triple-digit territory."WIthout a doubt people are noticing and they're feeling the pinch," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, a platform that helps drivers find real-time prices.AAA says that fifteen states, including New York, New Jersey and Illinois, are already facing average gas prices or higher. Gas in California and Hawaii, traditionally two of the priciest states, is north of .70 a gallon.Here's why gasoline prices are getting uncomfortably high:People are driving more: The United States is consuming more gasoline, thanks to the strong economy and upbeat consumer confidence.That trend could continue into this weekend. AAA estimates that 36.6 million Americans will travel by auto this weekend. That's almost 5% more than last year. Overall, AAA estimates that 41.5 million Americans will travel by car, planes, trains, buses and cruise ships over Memorial Day weekend, the highest since 2005."Demand is red-hot," said DeHaan.Crude awakening: But demand isn't strong enough to justify the spike in prices. That's where crude oil comes into play. Brent crude, the global benchmark that tends to influence US gas prices, recently topped a barrel. Doctor's offices have been doing it for awhile, but now CVS's Minute Clinic is jumping on board. Whether you have insurance or not, you can use it.There are a few stipulations if you're planning to use the video visit. You can only be seeking treatment for a minor illness, injury or skin condition. Each phone call will cost you .To get started, users will need to download the CVS app and complete a health questionnaire. Users will then be matched with a healthcare provider in the patient's state. They will look over the questionnaire and the medical history provided. After that, the video chat begins.  Many say this method is a better option than self-diagnosing yourself on WebMD. However, it does beg the question: can you really be properly diagnosed over the phone?Kevin Flynn with Healthcare Advocates says Telehealth is helpful in many ways, but there are a few downsides, especially if you think you have the flu."There's also a danger with the flu, which is dehydration," says Flynn. "Can a doctor really properly diagnose the dehydration over tele-medicine?"Flynn says Telehealth is great for those over the age of 40, who know and understand their bodies. But he says it's not great for the younger population, who don't really know that much about their health.If you still like going into the doctors office to be treated, Flynn says, a little secret in the health world in that some doctors will take cash for an in-person consultation. And if you have insurance, make sure to check your plan doesn't already offer virtual chats before you go through CVS.   1880

HAMPTON ROADS, Va - From Los Angeles to Wrigley Field, Norfolk to Virginia Beach, strange signs are bubbling up on telephone poles across the nation."So I went old school put up about five fliers in my neighborhood and saw it worked really well," said D.C. resident Joe Kogan.Kogan who lives in the nation's capital has spent the last six months working to make his four-inch Pufferfish “Rona” Insta-famous."Once I got all-around D.C, I drove through all the surrounding areas then even drove to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Hampton, just looking for poles near people," said Kogan.Kogan has never owned a fish – quarantine piqued his interest in the underwater world, and his grassroots efforts have blown Rona into what he calls a "fin-influencer.""I am really glad I got her because she has been keeping everyone in this house sane," he said.She has more than 27,000 followers, more than the Virginia Aquarium."A lot of people think fish are kinda like gotta be weird to be a fish keeper and there is no respect in pet keeping community among fish," said Kogan. "I think Rona has put the fish keeping world on the map."The exotic fish dazzles followers daily with her live crawl fish feedings. She is still learning how to hunt and will soon reach her full size of two feet!"She is an underwater puppy and gets very excited to eat her food," said Kogan. HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – Sitting in a classroom with a teacher and friends is what Ryan, a high school senior in North Carolina, misses.“He has mentioned how much he misses just being in the school,” said Ryan’s mom Dr. Jonna Bobzien.Ryan started virtual learning this week.This past school year, Bobzien said Ryan struggled with online learning.“It was very different,” she said. “It was asynchronous online, just a lot of watching pre-recorded information and he really struggled with that, because there is no sense of interaction, nothing really to hold the attention of the learner.”This academic year, however, he seems to be thriving.“This year, I find him, even though it’s only the first week, more excited,” said Bobzien. “His classes allow them to use avatars, so he can sit there and rock when he’s concentrating.”Ryan has autism and ADHD, so focusing his attention and sitting still for long periods can be difficult.Ryan is not unique. Many children, who are learning virtually are facing the same mundane challenge.“Just sitting in front of a computer listening to your teacher talk or watching a video can be a little less entertaining as far as value or attention-getting,” Bobzien said.Dr. Bobzien is not only a mom, but she also chairs the Communication Disorders and Special Ed Department at ODU. Additionally, she is an associate professor in special ed at the university.According to Bobzien, establishing a workspace for your child to call their own can make a difference.“Helping them to feel like they’re in that real classroom setting,” she said. “In a classroom, teachers are skilled at minimizing distraction…. When we’re at home, it can be more difficult.”Wearing headphones can help students block out distractions.Bobzien said it’s key to establish a routine and structure with some flexibility as parents navigate the role of mom and dad and teacher. She said it’s also essential to redirect a child’s attention rather than reprimand him.“Students with attention difficulties, also students with autism, they crave predictability and routine,” she said. “When you’re a virtual learner you have the opportunity to engage in some of those maybe unusual behaviors like rocking or spinning a pen that help you to focus without that sense of being pointed out.”Though Ryan’s senior year isn’t what he was expecting, there may be an upside to learning online for him and others who shy away from public attention.“With parents, may actually see, in some cases, improvements,” Bobzien said. “Sometimes, students who do have difficulties don’t like being under the spotlight as much.”Antoinette DelBel first reported this story at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2685
