SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two women who worked as massage therapists at the Grand Del Mar are suing the resort’s parent company, claiming the spa allowed them to be sexually harassed by male clients. Christina Murphy and Madeline Flores made allegations this week of sexual harassment, failure to prevent harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation against FHR GDM Hotel Management Company LLC. The women’s claims involve two spa clients, Steve Hodsdon and Juan Pablo Mariscal, who the women say made inappropriate advances during scheduled massage appointments. The Grand allowed clients to disregard protocols for keeping themselves covered and repeatedly exposed themselves to therapists, according to a court document filed by the women’s attorney. The male clients also made sexually suggestive comments and gestures and propositioned their therapists for sexual favors, the document said. The legal complaint also details issues Flores and Murphy said they addressed to the spa’s lead massage therapist, manager, director, and human resources representative. The Grand “ignored the complaints and tried to brush them under the rug to keep these male clients coming to the Spa,” the document reads. Both Flores and Murphy used administrative channels to make complaints in Aug. 2018, filing sexual harassment complaints with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. On Feb. 26, 2019, Murphy and Flores amended their complaints to include a claim of construction discharge in violation of FEHA or wrongful termination, respectively, and the DFEH closed their cases. The women say they suffered emotional distress, mental anguish, nervousness, grief, anxiety, worry, shock, humiliation, and shame.In a statement sent to 10News, Murphy said, "From the beginning, the Grand Del Mar makes it clear that as massage therapists, we should feel privileged to work on such high-end clientele. This creates a power differential where the guests have all the power and the therapists are powerless to challenge inappropriate conduct. The sexual intimidation by these male clients caused me so much fear – fear of what these men were capable of and fear of retaliation by the Grand for reporting them. But I had to speak up to protect myself and my coworkers. When it became obvious that the Grand was not going to protect me, I did the only thing I knew would keep this from happening to me again – I quit."Flores said in the same statement, "What happened to me and Christina never should have happened. The Grand should have taken action to stop this harassment the first time it received complaints about these men. But the Grand did nothing and we ultimately paid the price. The Grand made me feel unsafe at work when they were supposed to be the ones to protect me. This was a profession that I went to school for and that I loved, and now, I have lost my passion for it. I was scared to come forward but ultimately, I felt I had to come forward because I do not want what happened to me to happen to other massage therapists."Their attorney, Alreen Haeggquist, with Haeggquist & Eck, LLP said, “The law is simple and straightforward: an employer has a duty to protect its employees from harassment. But in the face of multiple detailed complaints by its female massage therapists over a period of years, the Grand has chosen to instead protect the perpetrators. The Grand has made a clear choice: the tens of thousands of dollars its predatory male clients spend at the Hotel is far more important than the safety of its female employees. For the right amount of money, the Grand will ignore clients who remove all draping, grind on the massage table, expose their erect penises and ask its therapists for prostate massages. Over the past few years, the Grand has refused to accept any responsibility for its systemic failures. They have had multiple opportunities to do the right thing and protect their female massage therapists – and time after time, they’ve failed to do so. Well, time’s up.”The plaintiffs believe no fewer than six massage therapists may have been victimized, the court document says. The hotel responded in a statement of its own, "Fairmont Grand Del Mar acts diligently to investigate employee complaints and is confident that there was no wrongdoing by the hotel in connection with this matter. The safety of our guests and our colleagues is a top priority and providing a healthy work environment remains paramount. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  As the San Diego Airport plans a Billion expansion to Terminal 1, concerns over how to get people to and from Lindbergh Field are creating problems for the project."We are the first and last impression people have of San Diego," says Dennis Probst, the Airport VP of Development. "We want to make it a good one."The airport served a record 22 million passengers in 2017. They expect that number to grow to 28 million by 2035.  Getting all of those people to and from Lindbergh is a big part of the expansion.Plans put forward by the airport call for a new three lane roadway connecting Harbor Drive to Lindbergh. It would start near Laurel Street and take people directly to the new terminal and proposed parking garage."No stop lights, no stop signs, free-flowing," says Probst. "It's gonna take about 45,000 cars a day off Harbor Drive."But other San Diego agencies say the airport needs to think bigger and focus on different modes of transportation, instead of just cars."Connecting the airport to transit is something we've been talking about for a long, long time," says Rafael Castellanos, the Chair of the Port of San Diego. "If San Diego wants to be a world class city, we need to have world-class infrastructure."The Port owns the land that the airport sits on. They've proposed a light rail-style people mover that would connect trolley stations nearby to the terminal.Meanwhile, SANDAG and the County of San Diego released a study proposing a skyway with gondola rides that could run from the Convention Center to the Airport."I think the only obstacle is getting everyone to the table quickly," says Castellanos. "That's something that can be easily overcome."The airport says they're willing to look at all options, but they can't take a stand or incorporate any into their current plans because they can only control what happens on airport property."The view from the airport's side is that we're not the region's transit planning agency," says Probst.Funding is also an issue. The expansion project will only use FAA and airport-generated money. Because of that, FAA rules say they can only spend money to improve things at the airport or directly related to the airport. A tram or skyway that spans all of Harbor Drive would require an exception to that rule and would need money from other agencies as well.Probst says the airport has already started talking to the FAA about that option. They got a similar exception to help with infrastructure improvements when the airport built the rental car center a few years back.Right now, the airport is reviewing comments from their Environmental Impact Report. The next step is to put together environmental quality reports for the state and the federal government. Probst says the debate over transit is slowing down the process, to the point where he doesn't think they'll be able to start construction until after 2020. 2932

It includes inland valleys to the mountains.The heat prompted a state-wide flex alert for the weekend. According to the California Independent System Operator, the flex alert goes into effect Saturday, Sept. 5, and lasts through Monday, Sept. 7. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many young military families in San Diego are finding themselves trapped in mountains of debt, not knowing where to turn.It's a devastating problem that the nonprofit Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is working to tackle."It's a real challenge, and I think we are setting these families up for failure a lot of the times," said Tony Teravainen, CEO and Co-founder of STEP. "Their wage with all their allowances, E4 and below, 100% of them are below HUD's low-income level."RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeTeravainen says families often don't ask for help until things have gotten really bad. STEP helps prevent roughly seven evictions each month for young military families. "As a country, we don't have great financial habits. And what we see is when families enter the military we put additional burdens on them, and a lot of times this pulls them further, further into debt. We ask them to move their houses every two to three years; service members can be deployed at least a third of the time."The goal is to get as many families in need into their Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) Program.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Millennials outpace Generation X in both total debt and long-term savingsThe EFA Program is a unique social-work and change-management based program that was specifically designed to move military and veteran families from a financial crisis to a lifetime of financial self-sufficiency. Each family gets a social worker who helps them create a budget and set goals for the future.Teravainen says 4,500 families have come through the program since it was created in 2012 and they have a 90% success rate."A success story to me is a family that can change their behaviors," said Teravainen.
