SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a string of recent fires in San Diego County and statewide, it’s no secret that so-called fire season, which California fire agencies say is now year round, is getting worse.So far this year, Cal Fire has battled nearly 3,800 wildfires that have so far scorched more than 292,000 acres.That figure shows a sharp increase from previous years and is far above average for this time of year.According to Cal Fire, the last five years have, on average, seen just over 118,800 acres burned statewide by this time."We are seeing more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen," said Jonathan Cox, Cal Fire regional Battalion Chief.The increasing danger even has agencies like the US Department of Agriculture warning of the risks. As far as major fire incidents, so far this year there have been well over 100. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts from all over San Diego County honored our local veterans laid to rest at Greenwood Memorial Park on Saturday. They placed American flags at the gravesite of every fallen veteran at the cemetery. The event is done all over the country to teach the scouts about patriotism and community service. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego-based Marines are under investigation after posting a video that appears to show them in "blackface."According to KPBS, Zach Highfield originally posted the video on Snapchat. Highfield's Instagram page shows him in his Marine uniform. The video shows Highfield and another man in uniform with their faces blackened. One of them is heard saying "blackface." The other man puts on his cap and salutes. At one point, one of them uses a racist slang used to describe African Americans. The video shared on social media, with many people on Twitter, saying the Marines should be kicked out of the military. Bishop Cornelius Bowser is the pastor of Charity Apostolic Church. He agrees. "It seems as though, whether it's military or someone in the community or working for a company, they should have learned by now that this is unacceptable," said Bishop Bowser. Highfield told a KPBS reporter, they were wearing charcoal masks used to clean pores. He said they didn't mean to offend anyone. 10News tried calling Highfield at the number posted on his Instagram page, but his voicemail was full and he did not respond to texts. Bishop Bowser believes the two knew exactly what they were doing. "We pay our tax dollars for them to protect and serve our country and this is not it, right there, that kind of display, that kind of character should not be allowed." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a school in the College East area late Thursday night.At around 11 p.m., San Diego police were called to Harriet Tubman School on 6880 Mohawk St. in response to two people seen on the campus.When officers arrived, the two people ran away. Following a brief foot chase, police caught the pair and took them into custody.Police said officers discovered a classroom with a window that was smashed, a vandalized TV screen inside a room and graffiti.Officers also found fireworks they believe the two people planned to set off. 603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two guided-missile destroyers were simultaneously dry docked at a Barrio Logan shipyard Wednesday. The USS Stethem and USS Decatur were lifted together inside the BAE Systems’ “Pride of California” dry dock. The dry-dock is 950 feet long, 160 feet wide and has a lifting capacity of 55,000 tons. The destroyers each are 505-feet-long and displace about 9,000 tons, according to BAE Systems. Crews will conduct repairs on the ships’ hulls, internal ballast and storage tanks, ventilation, propulsion and engineering systems, and living spaces. The ships should be re-floated by April 2020, BAE systems reports. 636
