SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Bike the Bay celebrated its 11th annual ride on Sunday but this year it added some safety changes. Roughly 3,000 people participated in the popular bike ride. The ride is 25 miles and takes cyclists over the Coronado Bridge, through Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City. It's the only day of the year where bikes are allowed on the iconic bridge. This year, the event made some changes after an accident during the ride last year. Christina Rocheleau who was not participating in the ride collided head-on with a participant who was trying to pass cyclists along the trail. Rocheleau suffered a fractured nose and three fractured vertebrae. She hasn't been on a bike since. At the time of the accident, organizers told us that they take safety very seriously. This year, they added more signs along the route, more volunteers to guide cyclists and made the route all one-way. All of the proceeds for the ride go towards the San Diego County Bike Coalition, an organization that promotes bicycles as a form of transportation and advocates for safer roads for cyclists.   1156

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans Friday unveiled a new study aimed at reducing delays on freeways throughout San Diego County.The study is being held on State Route 78 between Vista Village Drive and Interstate 15.In order to reduce stop-and-go traffic, the study will use seven electronic speed limit signs that will tell drivers the speed that will optimize their commute.“The aim of synchronizing traffic is to gradually slow traffic in advance of a bottleneck in order to keep traffic moving and avoiding stop and go traffic,” said State Route 78 Corridor Director Allan Kosup. “Essentially we are asking motorists to slow down to go faster.”Kosup equated the idea to pouring water into a funnel. Pouring it fast causes it to overflow, while pouring it more slowly gets all the water through efficiently. The signs will display advisory speeds at increments and decrements of 5 miles per hour based on traffic conditions.Drivers expressed skepticism at the program working."Even if I was to go that speed, the other people would be honking their horns behind me," said Michael Ciuzak, who said he tries to avoid the 78 on his commute to San Marcos. Caltrans noted that the speeds are not enforceable, but should help reduce delays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man Thursday they say had more than 100 pounds of narcotics in his car.According to the agency, the arrest happened just before 11 a.m. on October 8 along Interstate 15 near Vista.Border Patrol says agents initiated a vehicle stop “on a suspicious 2015 Chevy Camaro” when a K-9 alerted authorities.After searching the car, agents found 68 bundles of cocaine and crystal meth hidden inside the vehicle’s quarter panels and cowling. The narcotics have an estimated street value of more than 8,000.The driver, who is a US citizen, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency.Since October 1, Border Patrol says it has seized over 491 pounds of cocaine, 7,169 pounds of methamphetamine, 178 pounds of heroin, and 383 pounds of fentanyl. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As reports surfaced that the Alliance of American Football would suspend all league operations, its teams — and fans — were left in a state of limbo.Fans searching for tickets to the San Diego Fleet's April 14 game at SDCCU Stadium against the Arizona Hotshots were met with a screen reading, "Oh-no! These tickets went fast and we're unable to find more right now."Calls to season ticket lines and links on the team's website went unanswered and returned no results Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the George Bailey Detention Facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were notified that an inmate identified as 63-year-old Dennis Lee Curry needed medical help inside his cell on May 11. Deputies say when they arrived, Curry complained of pain to his head and chest, but had no visible injuries. Curry was taken to a local hospital where his condition worsened and he was placed on life support before he died on the morning of May 13. Following an autopsy, it was discovered that Curry died of natural causes. The Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit was called in to investigate, as they do with all in-custody deaths. Curry was in custody for outstanding warrants related to prior DUI and drug-related charges, according to the department. 860
