BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Eight Conference of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification (CCPPNR) came to an end Thursday, re-electing senior leader Jia Qinglin the council's chairman.     Jia is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     He attended the closing session and congratulated its success on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, saying facts indicate that the council has become a major link between the mainland and overseas Chinese, and a bridge between Chinese compatriots living on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.     He highlighted the role of the CPC in the great changes of New China in the past 60 years, stressing, "the Chinese nation will definitely play an even more splendid movement in the process of its great rejuvenation." BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China said on Sunday the U.S. decision to impose special protectionist tariffs on tire imports from China is grave trade protectionism and goes against its commitments made at the Group of 20 summit.     "We hereby express our strong discontentment and firm opposition to the U.S. decision, which was made regardless of China's solemn stance," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement.     U.S. President Barack Obama decided to impose a tariff on tires imported from China on Sept. 11, which will begin with a 35-percent duty the first year and decrease to 30 percent the second year and 25 percent the third year on passenger vehicle and light-truck tires from China.     "The United States, by making the decision, failed to honor its commitments made at the G20 financial summit and abused trade remedy measures, which is grave trade protectionism and will undermine the China-U.S. economic and trade ties as well as the early recovery of world economy," Jiang said.     China has lodged solemn representation to the U.S. side and reserves its right to take further actions, Jiang said.

HAVANA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana, a source with the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) confirmed.     The two leaders had a two-hour conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, the source added.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), spoke highly of the China-Cuba relationship, according to a NPC press release.     Bilateral relationship between China and Cuba is at its best time in history, Wu said, adding that China would strive to push its relations with Cuba to a new high by continuously expanding their friendly cooperation in various fields.     Castro said Cuba closely follows China's economic and social development and feels proud when China scores new achievements.     China's success is of special significance for Cuba and all the developing nations, he added.     "The Cuban people, along with the Chinese people, will continue to support each other, work closely and intensify their cooperation with the aim to maintain world peace and realize common development," the press release quoted Castro as saying.     On China's efforts to curb the global financial crisis, Wu said China is actively participating in international cooperation while striving to maintain a steady and relatively fast economic growth.     He said developing countries should have a greater representation and a bigger say in endeavor to deal with the global financial crisis and reform the global financial system.     He also urged the international community to try to minimize the damage the current crisis inflicts on the developing nations, especially on the most underdeveloped ones.     Wu arrived in Havana on Tuesday at the invitation of Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada, president of the Cuban National Assembly of People's Power (CNAPP).     Cuba is the first leg of Wu's three-nation American tour, which will also take him to the Bahamas and the United States.     China established diplomatic relations with Cuba on Sept. 28, 1960. This is typical of the Chinese society at large," Al-Jarad said.     The ambassador said he believed the July 5 riot was aimed at disrupting stability, undermining the harmony and close links among the various ethnic groups, and undercutting social development.     He said it was necessary for the Chinese government to take actions to protect Xinjiang's stability, restore law and order, and prevent extremists and outside forces from disrupting Xinjiang's peace and stability.     Al-Jarad said violence has nothing to do with religion, and goes against the religious doctrines of peace and fraternity.     Li Liangyi, a Singaporean expert on tourism told Xinhua that the July riot in Urumqi disrupted the harmonious development in Xinjiang, and is definitely against the will of the general public in China.     He said he is confident that the Chinese government will take measures in accordance with the law and promptly restore order in Xinjiang.     It is the responsibility of the government to maintain ethnic harmony and safeguard social stability and economic development, Li said.     A handful of people undermined social harmony in Xinjiang and caused great loss of life and property, he said, adding that their violent acts must be condemned.     In an interview with Xinhua, Yakov Berger, a senior research fellow with the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that the July 5 violence in Xinjiang seriously affected the stability of the region, and the Chinese government's measures to maintain social order are fully appropriate.     He said the separatist forces from inside and outside the country had plotted to create social unrest and undermine ethnic unity, so it is necessary for the Chinese government to take measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
