GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

Hawaiian authorities are urging sightseers to stay away as Leilani Estates residents return to check on their neighborhood, which is threatened by lava and toxic gases emerging from fissures in the subdivision.Big Island's Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, spewing molten rock and high levels of sulfur dioxide.Cracks emerged in the volcano's East Rift Zone — an area of fissures miles away from the volcano's summit. All residents of Leilani Estates, a community of about 1,700 people near Big Island's eastern edge, and nearby Lanipuna Gardens were ordered to evacuate.The eruption was followed by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake Friday.As of Sunday, 10 fissures had opened and 26 homes had been destroyed. GREENCASTLE, Indiana — Protesters at DePauw University in Indiana interrupted a press conference meant to discuss recent racist writings on and near campus, one day after students demonstrated at an on-campus event led by actress Jenna Fischer. After five incidents of racial slurs were written across campus in the last two weeks, protesters interrupted actress Jenna Fischer's talk Tuesday night. On Wednesday, university officials held a press conference to discuss the incidents and Tuesday's protest. About 10 minutes into the press conference Wednesday, DePauw President Mark McCoy learned about protesters outside the doors, wanting inside. McCoy and the other officials allowed the protesters inside, where they chanted, "Meet our demands. We are not safe." For about 20 more minutes, McCoy and the group discussed the incidents, and what the university is doing to stop future incidents from happening. "We are all together addressing every issue that has happened on this campus," McCoy said. "We are committed to addressing these issues. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a CNBC interview on Wednesday that government-funded coronavirus vaccines would be provided for free or at an affordable cost for the American public.Azar’s declaration comes as the government announced on Wednesday an agreement with Pfizer valued at .95 billion. An agreement stipulates that Pfizer would produce 100 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine for the US government to distribute as soon as one is ready.President Donald Trump added on Wednesday that after an initial 100 million doses are distributed, another 500 million doses would be received by the US government soon thereafter.“Hopefully, the approval process will go very quickly,” Trump said about getting the initial batch of 100 million vaccines. “And we think we have a winner there.
