Indonesian police say they have broken up a child trafficking operation that was allegedly buying and selling babies on Instagram.Four people were arrested, including a 22-year-old mother and 29-year-old suspected broker in Indonesia's second largest city Surabaya, police said in a press conference Sunday.A midwife and a suspected buyer were also arrested on the resort island of Bali.Authorities were alerted to an account on the popular photo-sharing site with the handle "Konsultasi Hati Privat," or Private Heart Consultation, that presents itself as offering pregnancy consultations and adoption services. However, police said they have found evidence that monetary transactions were being carried out.The head of criminal investigation unit in Surabaya's police force , AKBP Sudamiran, said Tuesday that his team foiled an attempt by a 22-year-old mother, identified as LA, to sell her 11-month-old baby to a buyer in Bali, known as NS, using the messaging service WhatsApp. The baby was allegedly being offered for 15 million rupiah (about 7).The Instagram account was still active early Friday and had more than 700 followers, having been running for about a year. It has since been taken down.Images featured on the page included black and white photos of ultrasounds, pregnant mothers and babies with their faces blurred. In one image posted on September 15, a baby, referred to as C86, was featured alongside information such as age, gender and religion. A contact number is provided with a message urging those who want to adopt or who want to leave a child for adoption to get in touch. The account also featured screenshots from WhatsApp conversations between the account owner and pregnant women or mothers. In one conversation, a woman who is seven months pregnant says she is unmarried and wants to find someone to adopt her child and to hide her until she gives birth so that her family doesn't find out.The head of Indonesia's National Commission for Child Protection (KPAI), Sustano, who like many Indonesians has one name, said social media has changed the way traffickers conduct business."In the old days, the transaction happened in person and it was usually arranged through a middleman," he said. "But now, they are using new and more advance methods, through social media like Instagram and Facebook. The cyber world has become a tool for promotion and transaction."Sustano says traffickers are drawn to social media because "it is considered more effective, the deal happens directly between seller and buyer, and it is not easy to be detected by law enforcement.""If the use of Instagram is proven in this case then it shows how traffickers constantly adapt to new methods for their trade," added Amanda Bissex, Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF. She believes it's now important that authorities "adapt their policy and legislative response to prevent such crimes, particularly against children, young girls and women."Indonesia is a major source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimates that 100,000 children are trafficked each year in Indonesia, with the majority being forced into the sex trade. In its 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report, the US government rated Indonesia as Tier 2, saying that the country "did not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking." Indonesia was however, "making significant efforts to do so."All four of those arrested face up to 15 years in prison for violating child protection laws.The-CNN-Wire 3567
INDIANAPOLIS -- A Cincinnati pastor will face trial by a council of church leaders in Indianapolis on Friday to determine whether his marriage to a man makes him unfit to be a United Methodist minister.Rev. David Meredith has served as the pastor of the Clifton United Methodist Church in Cincinnati as an openly gay man since 2012. More than a decade prior, in October 1998, the church became a so-called “reconciling congregation” that welcomes “all persons, regardless of sexual orientation,” according to its website. In 2016, though, Meredith’s sexual orientation became an issue for some members of his church after he married his long-time partner, Jim Schlachter.Rev. David Meredith, a @UMChurch pastor out of Cincinnati, will face a trial by church bishops in Indianapolis tomorrow over whether his marriage to a man disqualifies him from being an ordained UMC minister. It seems the “chicken wars” between fast-food restaurants are heating up once again.Last week, McDonald’s introduced its new spicy chicken McNuggets, which will compete with Wendy’s spicy nuggets. Now, Shake Shack has entered the roost. The restaurant known for its burgers announced Tuesday that its Hot Chick’n will be back for a limited time starting Tuesday. The item has been on the menu twice before. Now it's back and “ready to throw down in the chicken sandwich category,” a representative for Shake Shack said. The spicy version of the restaurant’s Chick’n Shack sandwich is made with real chicken breast (no added hormones or antibiotics) that is slow-cooked in a creamy buttermilk marinade, hand-dipped into Shack-made batter, dredged through seasoned flour and crisp-fried. The chicken is then dusted with a guajillo and cayenne pepper blend, topped with Shack-made cherry-pepper slaw and pickles, all served on a potato bun.Hot Chick’n is also returning with brand new Hot Chick’n Bites, Hot Spicy Fries and Hot Spicy Cheese Fries, made with the same guajillo and cayenne pepper dusting. All four Hot Chick’n items are available in two spice levels, hot and extra hot, and will be at Shake Shack locations nationwide, some exclusions may apply. Guests who order Hot Chick’n through the Shack App or order.shakeshack.com can get access to a third spice level, fire."When developing our Hot Chick’n menu, featuring the Hot Chick’n sandwich and brand new Hot Chick’n Bites, Hot Spicy Fries and Hot Spicy Cheese Fries, we wanted to make sure we launched them in an elevated way, inspired by our deep culinary roots and emphasis on premium ingredients," said Mark Rosati, Culinary Director at Shake Shack. 1718
In retribution for Delta ending its support for the NRA following a mass shooting that killed 17 at a high school in Parkland, Florida, the Republican-held Georgia Senate ended a jet fuel sales tax break for Delta that could cost the company up to million. The bill, which has already been approved by the state's majority GOP House, is said to have the support of Governor Nathan Deal. "Disagreement on key issues of our time should not prevent Georgians from keeping more of their hard-earned dollars," he said at a press conference Wednesday.Deal said he would find "a pathway forward for the elimination of sales tax on jet fuel, which is non-negotiable."Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, a Republican who is running for governor, said earlier in the week that companies can't "attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back.".Delta has yet to respond publicly to the lawmakers.Delta, headquartered in Atlanta, is one of the state's largest employers. Democrats in other states took the opportunity to invite the airline to do business with them instead."Virginia is for lovers and airline hubs," Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said on Twitter. "You're welcome here any time." 1213
