The Arizona state prison near Yuma is under lockdown after authorities were able to contain a riot involving hundreds of inmates Thursday night.Inmates reportedly attacked prison personnel around 6:45 p.m local time at the medium-custody Cheyenne Unit of the complex.Officials say around 600 inmates were involved in the disturbance, which included throwing rocks, setting fire to mattresses and other property in the yard and breaking into the prison health unit. ADC response and tactical teams from Yuma, Lewis, and Tucson complexes brought the incident under control around 9 pm., according to a statement from corrections officials.All prison staff are safe and accounted for.The inmates involved are being contained in a fenced recreation yard as ADC investigates. Additional criminal charges are pending for any inmates involved in violent activity.  900

The American Red Cross is now checking all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies, instead of just searching for recovered patients. The organization is calling it a “game changer.”“We can then not only inform that donor of the testing results that we've identified COVID-19 antibodies in their blood, but also use that product as convalescent plasma to help patients who are ill with COVID-19 in the hospital,” said Dr. Pampee Young, Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross.Early results from the National Institutes for Health show the plasma can make a big difference for severely sick COVID-19 patients. And data from these new tests will help those researchers working to better understand the virus.The Red Cross says the need for whole blood donors is constant, but plasma is more unpredictable.Over the summer, plasma supplies ran low after unprecedented infections and demand in some states.Now, they're asking more donors to step up to restock for another potential surge in the fall and winter.“Because we can’t predict the demand, we want to ensure that we have enough inventory, because what really saves lives are the units that are on the shelf, not something that we need to collect once we realize there’s a need,” said Young.The Red Cross has taken additional safety steps during the pandemic. TAMPA, Fla. — A middle school student in Hillsborough County, Florida was arrested on Thursday for possessing a loaded firearm on school property.Hillsborough County deputies said the 13-year-old male student brought the firearm to Dowdell Middle School on Thursday.Deputies said a witness saw the firearm in the student's backpack, then saw him place the firearm inside a large tractor tire outside of the school next to the bike rack. The Barron County Sheriff is asking the public for help in the search for 13-year-old Jayme Closs, who went missing after her parents were shot to death in their Barron, Wisconsin home. The sheriff said they need 100 people to help search the intersection of State Highway 8 and 16th Street at 2 p.m. in Barron. Barron County officials will be there to greet volunteers. Closs has been ruled out as a suspect in the double homicide and the sheriff says they believe she is in danger. Volunteers need photo identification and need to be able to walk over uneven terrain. Please wear proper footwear and bring your own water. Once 100 people are available, the sheriff said they will turn everyone else away.  745
