Verizon just admitted that the value of its media brand, Oath, is essentially worthless.Verizon announced Tuesday that it would take a .6 billion writedown on its the media unit, which includes Yahoo and AOL.Oath's brand value is now worth just 0 million, according to Verizon. That's a stunning decrease in value since it formed in 2017. Verizon said Oath's brand was worth .8 billion when it last accounted for the company's goodwill valuation.Verizon snapped up a number of legacy media brands in recent years to create Oath. It bought Yahoo for .5 billion in 2017 and AOL, which owns HuffPost, for .4 billion in 2015.With virtually no goodwill brand value, Oath's overall value (assets and goodwill) is now worth half of what it was a few years ago.The telecommunications giant said the integration of Yahoo and AOL didn't meet expectations.Oath "has experienced increased competitive and market pressures throughout 2018 that have resulted in lower than expected revenues and earnings," according to a filing with the SEC Tuesday. Facebook, Google and Amazon are sucking up ad dollars, forcing publishers to search for other streams for revenue.The Verizon media unit's poor performance led the company to make "unfavorable adjustments to Oath's financial projections" for the next five years.Verizon plans to focus more on wireless technology and less on content and distribution.This summer, Verizon replaced CEO Lowell McAdam with Hans Vestberg, the telecom company's former chief technology officer.In September, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong left. He was a driving force behind Verizon's media acquisitions. Armstrong was replaced by K. Guru Gowrappan, Oath's president and former chief operating officer.Verizon announced Monday that 10,400 management employees had accepted voluntary buyout deals, out of 44,000 who were eligible. Two Republican Senators in Georgia, both headed to their own run-off elections in January, released a statement Monday calling for the resignation of the state’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who is also a Republican.Without specific details or evidence, the statement from the senators says Raffensperger is responsible for “failures” in the election process.“The management of Georgia elections has become an embarrassment for our state. Georgians are outraged, and rightly so,” the statement from Senator Kelly Loeffler and Senator David Perdue reads. “The mismanagement and lack of transparency from the Secretary of State is unacceptable.” 662

Two gun shops in Southwest Florida are offering free gun training for teachers in response to the Parkland shooting.A free class at North Fort Myers Guns is designed to educate teachers about guns so they can protect themselves and others.A new state law allows schools districts the option to arm teachers under certain conditions.  They would be required to go through 144 hours of training and an evaluation process with law enforcement.Robert Lewis, the owner of North Fort Myers Guns, said the training he is offering will give teachers a jump start on how to use a gun.Lewis said it's a two-hour class where teachers can learn the basics and then they will go to a local gun range a few days later to practice firing a gun."My trainer takes you out to his private range in North Fort Myers. You will shoot any number of weapons you want. He makes it a true learning experience," Lewis said.The training is normally , but Lewis said he's offering it for free for teachers because he believes arming teachers will help protect kids in school.Two teachers have already signed up for Tuesday's training class. Lewis said depending on how many teachers sign up, he will hold a class at least once a month.Fowler Firearms in Ft. Myers, Florida is offering a similar service.After receiving a local donation, the manager John Dezendorf is offering the first five local certified teachers who sign up a brand new firearm and free platinum memberships.The membership includes free range time and gun rentals for a year.Dezendorf said whether the teachers are required to train through the state or county, his training services will give them the extra practice they need."The number one thing is to keep children safe and the only things to keep kids safe is to have people around them that are able to protect them. The only way you're able to protect them is with a firearm because you have to meet force with force," Dezendorf said.  2000

UPDATE: Tuesday's meeting was canceled due to an illness.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday night, the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department will present two options for redeveloping the De Anza area to the Mission Bay Park Committee.The meeting is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. at Mission Bay High School.The two plans were released to the public over the summer. Both feature improvements to sports fields, the Mission Bay Golf Course, green space, walking paths, playgrounds and beaches. Both also have new wildlife habitat areas included, although they vary on how many acres (27 or 38). A more detailed look at the plans can be found here.But wildlife preservations groups like the San Diego Audubon Society and ReWild Mission Bay say they don't go far enough to preserve the habitat or protect wildlife.They're calling for up to 200 acres of land set aside. They say it can also provide a buffer against sea level rises from global warming.They've put forth three other alternative plans that have limited amenities for people, but focus on open habitat space."I don't think being able to use an area for cycling, walking or jogging and conservation of the bay are mutually exclusive," says Linda Conser, who walks along the bay every week.
