SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man Thursday they say had more than 100 pounds of narcotics in his car.According to the agency, the arrest happened just before 11 a.m. on October 8 along Interstate 15 near Vista.Border Patrol says agents initiated a vehicle stop “on a suspicious 2015 Chevy Camaro” when a K-9 alerted authorities.After searching the car, agents found 68 bundles of cocaine and crystal meth hidden inside the vehicle’s quarter panels and cowling. The narcotics have an estimated street value of more than 8,000.The driver, who is a US citizen, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency.Since October 1, Border Patrol says it has seized over 491 pounds of cocaine, 7,169 pounds of methamphetamine, 178 pounds of heroin, and 383 pounds of fentanyl. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California police officers who leave their departments to join the San Diego Police can now get a ,000 cash bonus.The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the program Tuesday to help SDPD recruit new officers. The department has struggled to recruit and retain officers due to the city’s high cost of living and a pay scale that’s lower than competing police departments. A San Diego Police officer earns a starting salary of ,000 a year. Late last year, the City Council approved a series of salary increases of up to 25 percent through 2020. The San Diego Police Department currently has about 1,860 officers, which is about 180 short of its staffing goal. Chief David Nisleit said Tuesday that SDPD recently lost two officers to Chula Vista, whose entry level officers earn about ,000 a year. “What I’m looking for is to hire experienced law enforcement officers from other areas,” he said. "To make us competitive we had to offer a signing bonus to have them come over.”A lateral police officer - one moving from another department - would earn ,000 upon hire, then another ,000 after training, and the final ,000 after one year of continuous employment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Dangerously hot temperatures continue to scorch San Diego County's inland areas and deserts. Many of those areas hit peak temperatures well into the triple digits. Many inland residents chose to spend the day on the coast to escape the blistering heat.They say home is where the heart is. But for Peggy Dudenhoeffer, home is where the heat is. The Fallbrook resident drove 50 miles south Saturday, to enjoy the day in Bankers Hill, where it was about 15 degrees cooler."We feel like we're on vacation!" she said. "I like it better out here. We're lucky to be in San Diego to be able to sit outdoors in the summertime."She and her friend were at Barrio Star restaurant, which moved its operations all outdoors because of COVID-19 restrictions. But the restaurant was not going to let the heatwave turn customers away. They installed misters onto their rooftop overflow area."Right now, with this weather, it couldn't be better," Barrio Star General Manager, Michael Simpson, said. "Some nice mist, some nice picnic tables, and some nice margaritas!"Some preferred being closer to natural water. "Yesterday, I had to go to Ocean Beach just to escape the heat."Lynn said there was no way he could practice his skills back near his inland area home. "This is what it's meant for!"The National Weather Service forecasts the heat advisory in the County's inland areas to remain in effect until 9 pm Saturday.
