(SAN DIEGO, KGTV) -- Ahead of next week's United Nations Climate Summit, 10News is taking a deeper look at the effects of climate change. Since 1900, global sea level has risen 8 inches, dramatically increasing the odds of coastal flooding and damaging floods from storm surge. According to Climate Central, nearly 5 million people live less than 4 feet above high tide across the United States, and scientists expect roughly another 2 to 7 more feet of sea level rise this century.Imperial Beach is one of the most vulnerable in California to sea-level rise as it experiences flooding during periods of extreme high tides and winter swell. 10News looked into a program designed to give people ample warning, called The Resilient Futures program. The goal is to create a flood alert system through a network of instruments to measure local wave and water levels monitored by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography giving scientists and emergency managers a 3 to 4 day head-start to help determine where extreme tides may occur."It is something people are concerned about, and they want to know how often is this likely to occur. As sea levels continue to rise, what’s the change and risk as time goes on.” says Mark Merrifield, the Director of the Coastal Data Information Program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He goes on to say, “just like it helps to have a weather forecast if there’s going to be an extreme rain event or wind event coming up. (KGTV) - Attorneys for a former student of the Bishop’s School in La Jolla announced Tuesday a child sexual abuse lawsuit against the elite private school and the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. The man claims he was repeatedly molested by a female computer science teacher starting when he was 16 years old. 10News has reached out to the San Diego Police Department and The Bishop's School about the allegations but neither have commented at this time. Calls to the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego were unanswered Tuesday afternoon.The alleged abuse included sexual intercourse on campus, at [the defendant's] house, and other La Jolla and San Diego area locations, the lawsuit states. “On multiple occasions, teachers and Bishop’s Headmistress saw [the Plaintiff] exiting the computer lab together, with no other person in the room,” the plaintiff's attorneys said in a news release. The teacher was 32 years old at the time the alleged affair started, and was married with children, according to the release. In the release, attorney and victim’s advocate Vince Finaldi describes a long history of "criminal sexual activity" at the prestigious private high school."The Bishop’s School is a prestigious institution which charges parents more than ,000 per year in tuition. They advertise their affiliation with the Episcopal Dioceses as a way to assure parents of the moral rectitude of the school. Yet, they failed miserably in their most basic responsibility—keeping their students safe from sexual predators.” In May of this year, 10News reported that the school investigated numerous claims of sexual abuse at the campus. The school said that "14 alumni have come forward to report incidents of sexual misconduct."The school also reported then that "ten different perpetrators were identified as having engaged in sexual misconduct that would potentially constitute a crime at the time of occurrence."READ: The Bishop's School dealing with multiple claims of sexual misconduct spanning several decadesTuesday's news release included a statement from the plaintiff saying they want to keep their name private per "of every victim of child sexual assault in California." The plaintiff also advises other victims of abuse to contact law enforcement.“My message to other victims of abuse at the Bishop’s School is -- contact law enforcement. Hold your abuser accountable. Protect other children. Your privacy will be respected, and you will be believed," the plaintiff said. 2580

(KGTV) — City officials are investigating an incident caught on video between an African American man and a white La Mesa Police officer that led to the officer being placed on leave.The video, posted to Facebook this week, shows the incident that occurred at the Grossmont Trolley Station on Fletcher Parkway. The city said the footage appears to "indicate that a LMPD officer detained an African American male, and in the process, the LMPD officer administered physical contact."The video footage starts after an altercation had already begun between Amaurie Johnson and the police officer. It then shows the escalation and Johnson being placed in handcuffs. Johnson is told that he's being charged with assaulting an officer and led to a police vehicle.RELATED: La Mesa officer in arrest video placed on leave, pending investigation“For that situation to escalate the way it did, and for the cop, you know, to stand firm in his beliefs that I should be detained or taken in with no prior evidence or reasoning, I think that should be seen by the people,” Johnson said in an interview with 10News.He said he was waiting for his friend at the trolley stop, near a building where that friend lives.Johnson said an officer started questioning him and he gave him the information that he wanted.The nearly six-minute video shows a heated verbal exchange between Johnson and the officer. It also shows the officer forcefully push Johnson into a sitting position onto a nearby bench.Johnson told 10News at no point did he resist or assault anyone."I feel as though people that look like me, um, feel the same way I do and we're tired of it. We're tired of having to deal with stuff like that,” he said.Johnson said he was cited with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.The La Mesa Police Department did not respond to our request for information about the citations. The department also didn’t respond to our request for the officer’s body camera video or release the name of the officer involved in the incident.On Thursday, the La Mesa Police Department issued a statement, saying they are "aware of a video circulating on social media depicting an interaction between a police officer and a citizen at the Grossmont Trolley Station yesterday. We immediately began a review of the incident to find out what happened. The La Mesa Police Department takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously and asks that any member of the public with information or video regarding this incident contact us at (619) 667-1400."The city says it has started a special investigation into the incident and that the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. 3147
