SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station was sentenced on Thursday to a year in jail.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, pleaded guilty last month to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Because of credit for time already served, Weaver will spend about 80 more days in local custody before being released, authorities said.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. No military personnel were injured, according to the Navy.Police did not say if Weaver had a motive for firing at the SEALs or if he was even aware of who he was shooting at.In light of the shooting, the Naval Special Warfare Command said it would evaluate its training procedures. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A murder charge was filed Wednesday against a man accused of striking a man in the head with a wrench outside a 7-Eleven store in the Rolando neighborhood, resulting in his death five days later.John Cowan Patch, 26, is accused in the Nov. 5 attack on George Almestar, 30, who was found around 4:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the convenience store near the intersection of El Cajon and Rolando boulevards.Paramedics performed CPR on the victim, who was bleeding from his head, and took him to a hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, Officer Scott Lockwood said.RELATED: Suspect pleads not guilty to 7-Eleven attack that left man on life supportAlmestar died at the hospital on Nov. 10, according to a GoFundMe page created by the victim's family.A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.Patch was arrested the same day and was arraigned Nov. 8 on attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A roughly 36-hour spell of hazardously heavy surf will hit San Diego-area beaches beginning tomorrow, making the ocean extra dicey for surfers, swimmers and boaters.The large west swell is expected to arrive late Wednesday morning and generate waves of six to 14 feet in some locales, with the highest sets mostly occurring south of Encinitas, forecasters said.The anticipated conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high-surf advisory, effective from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m.Thursday, and a small-craft advisory, set to run from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday.Among the dangers posed by the rough local seas will be strong rip currents, minor coastal flooding and coastal erosion, according to the federal agency, which cautioned that entrances to harbors -- particularly Mission Bay -- will be difficult due to breakers large enough to capsize boats.The surf likely will peak late Wednesday into early Thursday, then slowly subside through Friday, the weather service advised. 1034

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As the San Diego region prepares for possible cases of novel coronavirus, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday that even with six influenza-related deaths recorded last week, the flu season appears to be winding down.A total of 86 San Diego County residents have died from the flu so far this season, and of the half dozen deaths recorded last week, only one actually happened last week. All of the people who died had underlying medical conditions.That total is more than last flu season's entire toll.As of this time last year, the county had recorded 46 flu deaths. Last season's deaths totaled 77."Influenza appears to be declining, but people should continue getting vaccinated as the flu could last until April or May," said said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "The vaccine is safe and effective and the best tool we have to prevent influenza."Last week, Chairman Greg Cox, County Board of Supervisors, recommended everyone get a flu vaccine to protect themselves and their family, and reduce the potential strain on the healthcare system, which may be impacted by novel coronovirus concerns.There have been a handful of novel coronavirus cases in San Diego County and as of yet no deaths."It's important for everyone to educate themselves and their family and be prepared ...," Cox said. "It's also important for people not to panic as the risk for this new virus and the disease that it causes continues to be low."All but three of the people who have died from influenza this season had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA, which reported that the total number of reported cases decreased again last week to 637 -- 135 fewer cases than the previous week.
