SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This Veterans Day, an online service is offering a deal to help veterans preserve their memories for future generations.Story Terrace is giving vets a discount so that they can write books based on their lives and experiences. The company is calling it the "Speak and Listen" campaign."My grandfather was in the resistance in the Netherlands (in WWII), and I regret not recording his stories," says Story Terrace CEO Rutger Bruining. "That's why I think it's really important for the entire family that these stories are kept and retold, so people remember what happens."The service pairs people up with ghostwriters who spend hours interviewing the subject and then write a book for them. It costs between ,900 and ,450 depending on how long and detailed you want the book to be, and how many pictures you want to include."Ultimately, the content is up to the customer, to change and have it the way they want," says Bruining.Retired Navy Pilot Frank Miley wrote his life story on his own before he knew about Story Terrace. He says putting it in writing was emotional, but also crucial, so his family knows what he went through during the Vietnam War."I didn't do it for glory," Miley says. "I just wanted to let them know that I did my job to keep them safe."Jim Reily, who runs the docent program on the USS Midway, says that first-hand interaction is the best way for people to hear about veterans' contributions to the country."It's gratifying to talk to a bunch of folks who have never been on a ship and explain what happens and see the awe and wonder in their eyes," Reily says. "Our freedom isn't free. It takes sacrifice, and it takes the good efforts of the several hundred thousand folks that are in the service right now to protect our freedoms."Bruining says it's especially important to get these stories preserved now, as generations of veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam are passing away."The understand of what happened and the lessons we have to learn from history about the things that went wrong, but also the heroic tales of humankind, they will slowly get lost," he says. "Personally, I find that a real shame." 2178

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were rescued from atop the border wall in San Diego Sunday evening, Border Patrol said Tuesday. According to a news release, agents spotted three people perched on top of the wall near Otay Mesa around midnight January 5. A man and two women reportedly tried to enter the U.S. illegally by climbing the wall amid dense fog. “The trio became stuck at the top of the wet, slippery wall after smugglers abandoned them,” the agency said. Border Patrol says all three people, a 36-year-old man, 20-year-old woman and 18-year-old woman, were Mexican Nationals. All three were taken to a Border Patrol station for processing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County District Attorney’s office released Friday a detailed report and video evidence in the death of a woman arrested by San Diego Police. Aleah Jenkins, 24, was arrested Nov. 27 on an outstanding warrant for meth possession during a traffic stop in University City. The video released at a news conference Friday shows Jenkins vomiting in the back of a patrol car. The officer initially called for medical aid but it was called off because Jenkins said her illness was due to pregnancy. That was not true, according to District Attorney Summer Stephan. There were several points when Jenkins yelled and asked for help in the back of the patrol car. Officers took Jenkins to SDPD headquarters downtown, where she collapsed. Jenkins was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center and died Dec. 6. A spokesperson for the Jenkins family said San Diego Police could have prevented Jenkins’ death by getting her help when she said she didn’t feel well. The autopsy indicated Jenkins had PCP, THC, morphine, and meth in her system, but no injuries which would have caused her death. District Attorney Summer Stephan said at a news conference Friday that no charges would be filed against the officer who arrested Jenkins after a careful review of the evidence. "I looked at the fact that at the period of time where he didn't get a prompt response he pulled over he pulled over and physically looked at her,” Stephan said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Blood Bank asked Friday for the public to donate blood over Memorial Day weekend to make sure local patients have an adequate supply.Summer can be difficult for blood centers to meet supply needs due to donors taking vacations and schools being out of session.“We’re asking our community to keep our blood supply at a safe level by donating as individuals, or hosting blood drives through local businesses, churches and schools,” said San Diego Blood Bank CEO, David Wellis. “There is no substitute for blood – donations are needed now.”   Most San Diego Blood Bank collection centers will be open Memorial Day weekend and there are perks for donors.San Diego Padres: Donate at any SDBB donor center or mobile drive between May 24 and June 4 and receive a voucher for two tickets to a future Padres game.USS Midway: Those who participate in the museum’s blood drive will receive free entrance on May 28.Just My Ticket: Attendees will receive one free ticket to the San Diego County Fair when they sign up for the Just My Ticket e-mail service between May 25 and May 31.Next Tuesday, May 29, San Diego County Credit Union will host blood drives at six local branches from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. 1243

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests. At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business. The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery. After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle. As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody. However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof. After jumping from the roof down to the front parking lot, the man ran away as officers pursued him.The man was able to cross Federal Boulevard, but officers deployed a stun gun and subdued him.The stunned man was treated at the scene for his injuries and is expected to be OK. 1373
