SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marketing firm is moving from the East Village to Sherman Heights, and hoping the move can bring the same kind of renewal they saw in their old home to that neighborhood."I think it has a lot of potential," says Reid Carr, the CEO ofRed Door Interactive.Carr started his company in the East Village in 2002, as Petco Park was being built. He's seen the neighborhood grow up over the past two decades, spurred by business investment."To people who come down here, it feels like it changed overnight," he says. "But to be in it, it ebbs and flows with people coming and going and really figuring itself out. It's pretty spectacular."He thinks the same thing can happen in Sherman Heights, one of 35 "Opportunity Zones" in San Diego County."I think it needs this kind of commercial and business corridor to build it up," says Carr. "We're trying to be the first footprint there to do it."Opportunity Zones are federally designated areas that give companies tax breaks on capital investment. The goal is to spread businesses across communities."It signals the areas in our county that are really ripe for investment," says Nikia Clarke, the Vice President of Economic Development for the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation."Companies are looking at places like Sherman Heights as the next high growth parts of our region," she adds.But Sherman Heights comes with a unique set of challenges. The neighborhood was founded in 1868 and is a historic district. That means companies need to comply with design and architecture rules, so they fit into the community.Companies like Jack in the Box and Walmart opened locations in the neighborhood in the past few years, and found success within the restrictions."As a small neighborhood, it's important to us that businesses want to understand where they're coming into and want to work with the fabric of the neighborhood," says Sherman Heights Historian Louise Torio. "We want something designed today that fits into the rhythm of the streetscape."Carr says his business is excited to become a part of the neighborhood and plans to honor the historic feel.He bought the lot near 25th and Market for .2 million and plans another million to renovate the existing buildings."We're going to embrace what's there, revitalize it in some ways and respect it in a lot of other ways," he says.The company hopes to start construction this July and move in by April of 2021. 2460
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego contractor who admitted to stealing people’s money and not doing the work was sentenced Wednesday. Stephen Hage entered the courtroom as a free man, but left in shackles. Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin exposed the San Diego contractor back in 2018. Late last year, Hage pleaded guilty to three counts of grand theft and two counts of theft from an elder. Wednesday, he was sentenced to one year in custody on the charges. RELATED: Contractor accused of taking money and not finishing the jobWhile he was waiting for sentencing on the charges, a San Diegan now living in Arizona says that hasn’t stopped Hage from working. The man says Hage took his money and didn’t finish the job. The accusations brought up in court today. Prosecutors say total restitution to Hage’s 22 San Diego victims is about ,000. Wednesday, he brought in a check that’s not even close. “To come to court with ,700 after numerous months really isn’t sufficient.”The defense arguing he’s doing the best he can. “He’s not taking money from people and living this life of luxury, he’s barley getting by. After 30 days, Hage will be released to work furlough so he can earn money to pay back his victims.It will be up to Yuma County, Arizona whether or not to press charges there. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new public service announcement produced by the California Highway Patrol focuses on the deaths of a Valley Center family in a 2017 DUI-related crash and its impact on an officer and his niece, the lone survivor of the tragedy.In November 2017, the Latulippe family were traveling in Austin, Texas, when a drunken driver crashed into their vehicle.Scott Latulippe, his wife Nancy, and their 14-year-old son Jackson died in the wreck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new option for bike lanes along 30th Street in North Park looks like a compromise between cyclists and business owners.The new proposal, called Option A+, would build dedicated, protected bike lanes along a 2.4 mile stretch of 30th Street, stretching from Juniper to Adams Avenue. That's longer than initially planned.In return, business owners will get to keep some of their parking. That stretch has around 550 parking spots. The original plan removed all of them. The new plan leaves 100 in place, mostly in business areas rather than residential areas.RELATED: Hundreds of parking spaces in North Park could be removed for bike lanesThe plan first came up at a December meeting of the City Mobility Board.Even with the compromise, some business owners worry the loss of 450 spots will impact their customers."North Park is a destination city," says Kelsey Padigos, the owner of Subterranean Coffee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat and power boat collided near the Coronado Bridge Sunday afternoon, injuring four people, according to San Diego Harbor Police.A good Samaritan drove by and noticed people floating in life jackets as their boat took on water. He picked up nine people and ferried them to Pepper Park. "It's just what you do you're a boater, it's what you're supposed to do, you help out on the water, people have helped us and we've helped other people," Kary Brownlee said.The damaged powerboat, a Bayliner, was towed back to the Pepper Park launch ramp where four passengers were evaluated for minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital.The sailboat cruised back to Coronado on its own power."All it takes is a split second, when the captain is not paying attention that could cause a collision," boat safety advocate Amos Zolna said. He explained sail boats generally have the right of way, as they are harder to maneuver, compared to a power boat. Zolna said it's hard to navigate near the bridge, due to the large pillars that create blind spots.Harbor Police reported the 911 call at 1:28 p.m. They are investigating the cause of the crash and if any alcohol was involved. 1204
