ANDERSON, South Carolina — We all remember that feeling of euphoria as kids, you wake up on a cold, snowy morning and hear those two magical words, "snow day!"  Well, it looks like that will soon become a thing of the past in one school district.Pause for the gasps of horror, yes, a school district in South Carolina is ditching snow days. Instead, the district will require students to do classwork online instead of watching television reruns or indulging in a Netflix binge.Last week, Anderson School District Five announced on Facebook it was selected to pilot the first eLearning program in the state of South Carolina.Here's how it works: When nasty weather strikes, these students will need to review assignments using their school-issued Chromebooks, which don't require internet access. The assignments will be uploaded via Google Classroom.Students who are having difficulty accessing those assignments or who are too young to have a Chromebook will be given a five-day grace period. 1037

America's oldest department store is officially closing.Lord and Taylor announced Thursday they would be shutting down their remaining 38 stores. The high-end retailer began as a Manhattan dry goods store in 1824. It was sold last year to the French rental clothing company Le Tote Inc.Lord and Taylor filed for bankruptcy on August 2.The company said the initial plan was to leave some stores open but decided it was a better financial decision to close all the stores.The liquidator for the company said customers could expect deep discounts on merchandise both in stores and online."This Going Out of Business event gives shoppers the opportunity to take advantage of exceptional savings on notable brands at rarely seen discounts," a spokesperson for the joint venture stated. An Atlanta police officer has been fired following the fatal shooting of a black man and a second officer was placed on administrative duty. The move announced by police early Sunday comes on the heels of the resignation of Atlanta's police chief following the killing of 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks. Police identified the fired officer as Garrett Rolfe. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said she doesn’t believe the shooting was justified. "It has become abundantly clear that over the last couple weeks in Atlanta is that while we have a police force full of men and women who work alongside our communities with honor respect and dignity," Bottoms said, "there has been a disconnect with what our expectations are, and should be as it relates to interactions with our officers and the communities in which they are entrusted to protect."The Georgia Bureau of Investigation say Brooks resisted arrest after he failed a field sobriety test and a struggle ensued over a Taser. Police say 36 people were arrested at Saturday night protests. A Wendy's restaurant, which was the site of Brooks' death, was destroyed amid the unrest on Saturday.Police have released body camera and dash camera footage.The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers responded to a call of a man who fell asleep behind the wheel in a drive thru. The police accused Brooks of failing a field sobriety test.Police then claimed Brooks struggled with officers during the arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers then fired a Taser at Brooks.Eyewitnesses told investigators that Brooks then struggled with officers over the Taser, and that’s when Rolfe officer shot Brooks.Brooks was transported to the hospital, and he died during surgery.Atlanta has been the site of a number of large protests in recent weeks in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Floyd died on Memorial Day in police custody after a Minneapolis police officer held a knee against his neck for nearly nine minutes.The NAACP reacted to Saturday's shooting via Twitter."Stop urging the black community to be patient as our people are being gunned down by those sworn to 'protect and serve.' An elderly woman was found by a drone in a corn field in North Carolina after the local sheriff's office investigated a missing person's report.The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded Sunday morning and launched a search for the woman using a drone and K9.The search was slowed due to difficult terrain and a corn field. However, the drone pilot was able to locate the missing woman by air within 25 minutes.The sheriff's office said the woman's family expressed their gratitude for the quick response. 556
