SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Camp Pendleton Marine was sentenced Monday to more than 17 years in prison for owning and distributing child pornography.William Walsh IV, 55, was arrested in May 2017. Escondido Police officers searched his home and seized hundreds of files Walsh had downloaded through peer-to-peer file sharing software.A jury found Walsh guilty of all charges. U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Battaglia said Walsh’s conduct was “on the extreme end of the cases I have seen.”“Today a man who committed terrible crimes against children was sentenced to many years in prison,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “These horrible experiences will echo in the hearts and minds of young victims for a lifetime, and I am deeply distressed and deeply committed to pursuing cases that will protect our vulnerable youth from people like Walsh.”“Today’s sentence confirms that this predator can no longer victimize innocent children because he is off the streets and he is offline,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge John Brown. “This investigation showcases the success of collaborative federal and local investigations working toward a common goal.”Walsh will serve his sentence in federal prison. 1208

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A graduate program at the University of San Diego that teaches peacebuilding will evaluate whether or not to send students back to Culiacán, Mexico. The concern comes after Thursday's bloody battle involving Mexican federal troops and the son of notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.The USD Kroc School's Trans-Border Institute has been regularly taking graduate students to Culiacán for the last five years, offering seminars and certificate programs in peacebuilding that have had an impact on the region, said program director Ev Meade."It's one of the only states in Mexico that's actually improved with respect to violence and was on the upswing until 3:30 yesterday afternoon and now all bets are off," Meade said in an interview.Meade was scheduled to speak at a conference on Friday but had to cancel the trip abruptly when cartel shooters laid siege to the city.The incident began when members of the Mexican National Guard patrolling a neighborhood in Culiacan and were ambushed by members of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Among those members of the criminal gang was Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of "El Chapo" Guzman.Cartel forces blocked roads with burning cars and demanded the release of El Chapo's son, who had been captured by Mexican security forces.Violence spread across the city until authorities suspended operations and released Ovidio Guzman Lopez.At least seven people were killed in the battle, one Mexican National Guard member, one civilian, and five cartel members, according to Security Minister Alfonso Durazo."It was terrifying. I had friends who were trapped in their offices. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A choir group from Carlsbad High School got the chance of a lifetime Tuesday night when they took the stage with a legendary rock band.Students from the choir gave themselves an opportunity to perform with award-winning band Foreigner by entering a contest from local radio station KGB-FM in May.“We just sent in a video to KGB, and they gave us a call and said, ‘Hey, you guys won,’” said Carlsbad High choir director Jessie Bullock.“Our teacher told us one day in class and we were like, ‘Oh my gosh. There’s no way! That’s amazing!’” said student Garret Avilez.To the members of Foreigner, public school music education is important.Bassist Jeff Pilson said with tight budgets, public music programs are often the first to get cut. Those programs personally inspired his career.“I started playing the cello when I was in 5th grade and happened to end up with an amazing music teacher,” said Pilson.None of the students were born until decades after Foreigner made a name for itself worldwide. The woman, Marieme Bouguerba, is being represented by San Diego attorney Charles Field, a partner with Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP "She's devastated. You have a single mother who lives with her parents, and she's trying to make things go and to have her entire life savings decimated like this is a major setback for her - both financially and emotionally," said Field.The lawsuit claims Mark Bernier trolls dating websites for vulnerable, high net worth women as part of his investment scams. It goes on to say he advertises himself as a licensed investment professional, attempts to build trust and confidence, and then aggressively seeks to separate the women from their money through purported investments.Bernier is listed as CEO for San Diego-based venture capital firm, VentureMoney Management Co. Field says his client met Bernier on the dating website MillionaireMatch.com, a site designed to help successful people find love. Field says Bernier has exchanged over 29,000 messages with over 3,000 women through the Millionaire Match website, to sell them worthless securities. "Well I think that's the mark of a good salesman, is that a good salesman can make a good pitch, can make a convincing pitch, and when it's backed by a legitimate looking website that has very prominent people on there, all that combined led her to believe that this was reputable," said Field.Field says Bernier scammed his client out of 0,000. While they received 0,000 back during mediation, Field says they are not being told where the rest of the money is."It seems reputable, when you look at the website it seems like he's [Bernier] trying to do good things, that's what it appears. But like I said, we asked where the money is, we asked what it was invested in, where it went, and we have not gotten any answers," said Field. Their lawsuit accuses Bernier of not even having a license to sell securities or give investment advice in California. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three San Diego County sheriff's deputies were justified in fatally shooting an Alpine man who charged at them with a knife in his hand last fall, according to a report released Wednesday by the District Attorney's Office.Daniel Ayala, 31, was shot 10 times outside his apartment in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard last Nov. 12.Sgt. Chris Katra, Cpl. Sean McGillicuddy and Deputy Kevin Nulton responded to that address around 2:50 p.m. following reports that a man was screaming, talking about killing himself and others, and throwing items, according to a letter prepared by District Attorney Summer Stephan and addressed to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.Body camera footage from two of the lawmen was also released by the D.A.'s office.RELATED: Man who was fatally shot by deputies in Alpine identifiedAs the deputies approached the front door of Ayala's unit and knocked, announcing ``Sheriff's Department'' three times, Ayala opened the door, said ``What's up!'' and jabbed a knife twice through his metal screen door, the body-worn camera footage shows.The deputies backed up from the door as Nulton alerted the others by saying ``Knife, knife, knife.''Ayala then opened the screen door and advanced towards the lawmen, who opened fire, striking him mostly in the upper body, according to Stephan's letter.Ayala died at the scene. His 5-year-old son was inside the apartment during the entire encounter, but was physically unharmed, according to the district attorney.Toxicology results showed Ayala had methamphetamine, heroin, cannabis and alcohol in his system.Stephan's letter concludes that the deputies ``were in a confined space when Ayala advanced on them quickly with a knife in his hand.''
