Despite the CDC recently green lighting the resumption of cruises in US waters, Royal Caribbean announced Monday that most of its cruises will be suspended through the end of the year due to the coronavirus.The decision affects cruises domestically and internationally.Last week, Royal Caribbean applauded the CDC for allowing the cruise industry to resume operations.“While we are eager to welcome our guests back on board, we have a lot to do between now and then, and we’re committed to taking the time to do things right,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement. “This includes training our crew in new health and safety protocols and conducting a number of trial sailings to stress-test those protocols in real-world conditions.”Carnival previously announced that most of its US-based cruises are suspended through the end of the year.Before last week, the CDC had a no-sail order through October 31 on all cruises in US waters carrying 250 or more passengers.The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate. 1141

DENVER – Approximately 10,000 teachers are expected to gather at the Capitol building in Denver on Friday for the second day of walkouts and rallies calling for better pay, more school funding and pension reform.About 2,000 people took part in Thursday’s rally, chanting “Fund our schools!” and meeting with state lawmakers to discuss bills still being hashed out that will make changes to the state’s pension program and what most teachers said is an underfunded K-12 education system in Colorado.The teachers wore red as part of the #RedforEd campaign that has swept across states like West Virginia, Oklahoma and Arizona – where teachers also were holding rallies Thursday and Friday. PHOTOS: Colorado teachers walk off the job, rally at Capitol for better pay, school fundingIn all, the state’s 10 largest districts will be closed between Thursday and Friday, most of them on Friday. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Vendors from the Del Mar Fairgrounds reopened in the parking lot hoping to make enough money through drive-thru orders to stay afloat.Tucked just behind the security office at the Solana Gate, you'll find signs for drive-thru fair food.Roxy's Restaurant, California Corn Dog Company and the Kettle Corn stand are staples at the fairgrounds. The pandemic shut down all of the fair's large scale events, events that would help vendors pay the bills.So owner of the Kettle Corn stand Oliver Feldhausen reopened April 24th in the Green Lot for orders to soften the financial blow."He was so pumped and happy with all the response he got, he invited us to come and join him," Shahram Naimi, owner of Roxy's Restaurant said.Naimi and Owner of California Corn Dog Company Rick Kasinak opened May 8th.Each Friday and Saturday they're open from noon to 6p.m.They're serving dozens compared to the thousands each day at the fair, but they say it's better than nothing."You know it's kinda touch and go but these weekends are definitely helping," Feldhausen said. He said he's thankful for the fair supporting them during this time and the power of social media."Every week we are seeing some of our regulars trickle in and as word continues to spread we're seeing more and more," he said.They're also spreading kindness. Each vendor is offering a discount to military personnel and first responders.Some customers are donating food to first responders and healthcare workers.Feldhausen said they've made deliveries to two fire houses, nurses and ER personnel. He said they were happy to deliver free of charge.Each owner has decades of experience at the fair."This would have been my 50th fair, " Kasinak said.Kasinak is third generation fair vendor. His grandfather opened his first stand in 1920 at the Minnesota State Fair. His father opened his first stand in 1969 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.Naimi came to the U.S. from Iran when he was 17 and started working in the restaurant business at 18-years-old. He opened Roxy's Restaurant in Encinitas with his brother in 1978. DETROIT, Mich. — A Detroit mother lost her battle with COVID-19 after giving birth to a baby boy. The 33-year-old woman, Erika Becerra, passed away before she could even hold her newborn son in her arms. Becerra had no underlying conditions other than her pregnancy. Her family is understandably heartbroken after the unbelievable tragedy. Thankfully, Becerra's husband, 1-year-old daughter and newborn son all tested negative for the coronavirus. Deshaunta Goolsby loves exploring new hairstyles.“I cut my hair all the time, I color it all the time, it’s a reflection of who I am and how I feel," Goolsby said. "I’ve had it braided to my waist; I’ve shaved it bald. I’ve done just about everything you can imagine to it.”However, it hasn’t always been that way. There was a time in her life when she had to wear her hair the same way at least five days a week.“It was processed, straight style and it was, ya know, shoulder length. It was, I guess, the industry standard.”Goolsby was a news anchor and reporter for 11 years. It was in her last few years that she wanted to transition to a hairstyle that was wasn’t so high-maintenance.“My family and I had gone to the beach one weekend or something and it was maybe midnight Sunday and I’m trying to straighten my hair back out to go to work the next day and it was impossible," Goolsby said. "I was in tears, my husband was helping me, and I just said ‘this is too much.’ So at that point, I did go to my news director and I said ‘hey, I’d like to wear my hair natural.'”In the news industry, it’s common for anchors and reporters to get their hairstyles approved, but it took a few weeks until Goolsby got the green light.“It was a lot of questions at first. ‘How are you going to wear it? We need to see it first.’ It was definitely an approval process.”Goolsby says there was some pushback from the community and she’d be called into the office. However, she also got a lot of praise from people who loved her natural hair.“It doesn’t take much," Goolsby said. "Which is why I love it. I shampoo it, and it air dries, and that’s about it.”Ashleigh Shelby Rosette is a management professor and senior associate dean at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. She recently conducted four different studies where participants of different races were asked to assume the role of a recruiter looking for job candidates.“We found that Black women with natural hair were evaluated as less professional, less competent, and they were the least likely to be hired,” Dr. Rosette said.Black women with natural hair – like afros, twists or dreadlocks – were compared to Black women with straight hair, white women with straight hair, and white women who chose to wear their hair curly.“Sometimes people equate natural hair with unkept," Dr. Rosette said. "And that’s not even remotely what it is. And so to suggest that a Black woman can’t be her authentic self and be judged on her merit is problematic. I think anyone would find it problematic.”Dr. Rosette says she’s hopeful this bias is changing as more people become aware of it. And the Crown Act – which prohibits bias based upon natural hair – is legislative policy that has been passed in seven different states. Dr. Rosette says she’d like to see the act pass in all 50 states and so would Goolsby. Otherise, they say it’s likely organizations will be missing out on some serious talent.“If they don’t accept you in that place, there’s somewhere else that will. And so maybe that will be the change that people need – that employers who are more accepting, they get the better candidates,” Goolsby said.Optimistic for a more accepting future, Goolsby is teaching her young daughters to be proud of their natural hair. 3284
