GUANLING, Guizhou, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged local government to use all resources to rescue victims of a landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province.Rescuers should save the lives of the victims and treat the wounded using all possible means, said Hui during an inspection tour of the disaster-hit area from late Monday to Tuesday.He also called for the utmost efforts to properly resettle people affected by the landslide and sounded caution regarding additional landslides.He said all areas prone to landslides should be examined closely and nearby residents must be evacuated immediately upon any sign of an impending landslide.Further, information about the disaster relief efforts should be made public in a timely, objective, open and transparent manner, said Hui.The landslide occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Dazhai Village, Gangwu Township of Guanling County, burying 107 people from 38 families. Rescuers said their chances of survival were slim.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. YUSHU, Qinghai, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the quake zones in China's far northwestern Qinghai Province would be quadrupled by 2015 on the basis of that of last year, Luo Huining, governor of the province said here Friday."By the end of China's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the GDP in Qinghai quake zones would reach four times as much as that of 2009, with the service industry accounting for 45 percent of it," Luo said during an exclusive interview with Xinhua, exactly 100 days after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu in April.The earthquake left 2,698 people dead and 270 missing.Luo said local authorities would focus on improving public services and promoting urbanization of the quake zones during the reconstruction phase.According to Luo, authorities would try to help all farmers and herdsmen in the region settle down within three years, upgrade their housing facilities, and provide them with basic access to safe drinking water."By the end of this year, local government would invest 5.55 billion yuan to rebuild 80 percent of farmers' houses in the quake zones," Luo said. Total investment in housing reconstruction in the regions would reach 9.6 billion yuan within three years.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, rose to its highest level this year boosted by rising food prices.The CPI gained 3.3 percent in July from a year earlier, 0.4 percentage points higher than in June, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday. It has exceeded the 3-percent full-year target ceiling the government set in March.Food prices, which account for about a third of the weighting in calculating the CPI, climbed 6.8 percent in July, compared with June's increase of 5.7 percent.The country's CPI gained 2.7 percent year on year in the first seven months of this year, 0.1 percentage points higher than the January-June figure, the NBS said.The producer price index, a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, grew 4.8 percent year on year in July, 1.6 percentage points lower than in June, the NBS said.
