BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin called for closer financial ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan while meeting with Fredrick Chien, the head of a Taiwan finance delegation here on Thursday.Jia, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that financial cooperation was crucial for the cross-Straits economic bond. CHENGDU, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)-- The reconstruction of the Erwang Temple, which was damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, is expected to finish on Nov. 18 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local heritage protection authorities on Friday.Sitting in the Yulei Mountains in Dujiangyan City, Erwang Temple was built over 2,000 years ago to commemorate Li Bing and his son, the two engineers who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.The temple will soon be partially open for visitors and the final touches are being added to the water supply, drainage system and lavatories in these areas, said Fan Tuoyu, deputy chief of the Dujiangyan Cultural Relics Administration.The entire temple will be opened after the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3, 2011, said Fan.The reconstruction project kicked off in June, 2008 with an investment of 126 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget.The temple was seriously damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake with almost all the ancient buildings having collapsed.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Saturday it had allocated 2 million yuan (about 303,000 U.S. dollars) to relief efforts in Guizhou and Hunan provinces, where days of snow and icy rain have disrupted people's lives.Freezing weather in south China has forced the evacuation of at least 58,000 people from their homes over the past week, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.The hardest hit has been Guizhou and Hunan, which will continue to experience the inclement weather over the next three days, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said Saturday.The ACFTU urged local trade unions to work closely with governments and related departments to minimize the impact of the bad weather on people's life.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed Monday that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government will wage the fight against corruption with greater determination and more forceful measures as the situation remains "grave".Addressing a plenary session of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's anti-graft body, Hu said all work should be done with the fundamental interests of the majority of the people as the core concern.Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said problems that seriously violated the public interest and sparked the most public complaints should be addressed to ensure social justice.He said efforts were needed to strengthen ties between the Party and the people and to enable the people to play a more active role in fighting corruption.Hu pledged to "combat graft strictly and punish corrupt officials severely" so as to win trust from the people.Hu admitted that prominent problems remained in the fight against corruption and efforts to build a clean government, and warned of a "grave situation and arduous tasks."He called for enhanced supervision and monitoring of the implementation of major central government and Party policies and measures and the promotion of a corruption-free work style among officials.He called for reinforced efforts to build a system to prevent and punish corruption."More efforts should be made to investigate graft in key industries and key posts," he said, stressing the supervision of procedures concerning the promotion of local officials to prevent abuse of power or other corrupt conduct.Figures from the CCDI show 146,517 officials across China were punished for disciplinary violations last year, including 5,098 leaders at the county head level or above and 804 officials who were referred for prosecution.Discipline inspection bodies received almost 1.43 million petitions and tip-offs last year and recovered 8.97 billion yuan (1.35 billion U.S. dollars) in economic losses for the state."All comrades in the Party must serve the people with all their hearts and use their power to seek benefits for them.
