BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday held a video meeting with the U.S. Asia Society, calling for the two sides to shoulder due responsibilities as major countries.

He said the two sides should first of all handle their respective domestic affairs well, and at the same time strengthen strategic cooperation and play a constructive role in dealing with global challenges, adding that the two sides should maintain the right direction of China-EU relations, stick to peaceful coexistence, open cooperation, multilateralism as well as dialogue and consultation, which are not only important experience gained over the 45 years since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties, but also key principles for the healthy and stable development of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership in the future.

Despite rising unilateralism and protectionism in some countries, "China has shown its commitment to international cooperation, openness, rules-based free trade and multilateralism which are important for global economic recovery," said Wilson Lee Flores, a columnist for the English daily The Philippine Star.

Following the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, all countries need to maximize actions in light of their respective national circumstances and capabilities, Xi said.
