SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry jumped into second place Monday in the San Diego mayoral primary election, leapfrogging over Councilman Scott Sherman.The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters could be faced with a choice between presumptive front-runner Assemblyman Todd Gloria, a Democrat, and Republican Sherman -- or another Democrat in Bry.The latter option would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Bry currently leads Sherman by just nine votes out of 338,673 counted in the race so far -- or .0026% of the vote.With a projected 37,000 provisional ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes officially made up, the race could prove exceedingly close.If Bry were to gain votes at the same rate as Monday -- which is far from assured -- she would win by just under 500 votes.In the race for City Council District 1, Will Moore maintained his lead over Aaron Brennan for second place. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A U.S. Army veteran pleaded not guilty in San Diego Wednesday to a pair of assault with a deadly weapon charges for allegedly stabbing an active-duty serviceman who, along with a friend, pointed out that the veteran's Private First Class badge was upside down on his uniform.Marc Dominguez, 42, who served in the Army in 2003 and 2004 as a Private First Class E-3, was ordered held on ,000 bail.Deputy District Attorney Kelly Rand told Judge Maureen Hallahan that Dominguez stabbed the active-duty serviceman and lunged at the victim's friend with a knife about 11:30 p.m. last Thursday at a Gaslamp Quarter bar after they questioned whether the defendant was in the military because a patch on his uniform was not attached correctly.The active-duty serviceman was stabbed in the head and bicep and sliced his fingers while trying to get the knife away from Dominguez, the prosecutor said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a large commercial building in the Morena area Friday, causing extensive damage and sending a thick plume of smoke into the air near Mission Bay.The blaze in the 1200 block of Morena Boulevard erupted about 5:40 p.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.Police closed down the north-south street to through traffic while firefighters worked to subdue the intense flames.Crews were still working to get the blaze under control as of 6:30 p.m. and trying to get inside the two-story structure to check on a report there might be someone inside, according to SDFRD public affairs.There were no immediate reports of injuries. 677
